Are these guys anything special? Do they confer some benefit to a division?

Well, they look cool and cook great French food for the troops (french fries, french bread, french dressing). :innocent:

[no flames please - I'm of french-canadian descent so am joking, eh cher?]

There really was nothing special about zouaves except their occasionally outlandish dress. Perhaps a bit more elan, but that's not modeled in the game ;-D

Thanks for the info. Then it will be a sharpshooter from Connecticut then. At least those guys give a decent bonus to the General!

Hey Offworlder, you a local or an expat in Mario-land?

I think the advantage of the Zouaves is that it lets you buy a smaller quantity of regular infantry if you want to max out a purchasing turn or create a small boutique division (in the sense of custom not in the sense of setting up a shop in Alexandria to sell expensive clothing to politicians wives or anything like that :P)

In that case I'd go for the 2 infantry regiment strong brigades. They're the best fillers out there...

Heh, if anything they should get a bonus to putting out fires; most zouaves were firefighters, mostly scottish heritage, and from New York.

Yeah, those 2-reg brigades are nice, I'd forgotten about them.

I'm somewhat lazy / impatient (and always lacking rail points it seems) so tend to use zoauves as filler rather than bring in small brigades from other states (I tend to build divisions all in one order in one state).

See the Zouave's outstanding behavior at the Battle of Alma in Crimea, they were really great soldiers.
Today in Paris, the bridge of Alma has a big Zouave statue and we can also know if river Seine traditional flooding will be dangerous if this well known statue has his feet under water (or worse).

Different Zouaves. The Zouaves of France were a pretty tough bunch.

Sorry, I was thinking mainly of French Zouaves because of their origin from Algeria. France "used" many of them after 1830.

I usually see zouaves start with combat effectiveness of 30 shown on their unit cards. Most infantry regiments are around 22. I don't see how their stats are different in other respects though.
