Civil War references

So what are your best civil war references? I am looking for detailed accounts of battles (found plenty of those), The US and CSA thoughts and what they wanted to accomplish and what really got accomplished, strategy that US and CSA were wanting to deploy, and most importantly detailed stats of the forces (numbers, break down of structure, commander, and all that).

Pretty much any resource that will help me in my modding efforts to make as realistic a scenario as possible will be greatly appreciated!

Thomas Livermore's Numbers and Losses in the Civil War of America.

One I'm reading now is The Longest Night: A Military History of the Civil War by David Eicher.

So far, I've run into a list of USA arsenals, armories or ordnance depots, naval ordnance facilities , and CSA ordnance/naval facilities. And a nice description of artillery. (15 methods of classification, as well as a quick survey of the 225 major types.)


Catton's three volume set is also worth a read.

Found some pretty good online references as well. Right now I am reading and taking notes about the first Battle of Bull Run and it lists how many men, the structure of the units, who was in command and the strategy of the battle as well as observations from both sides and independant observers.

I absolutely agree with Gray - Foote is the essential military history resource. McPherson's Battle Cry of Freedom is the essential socio-political history. Catton is an excellent backup to either.

No doubt. I just read an excerpt from Volume 2 on Amazon (The seige of Ft Pulaski by Quincy Gillmore). This is definitely the series I've been looking for. Gonna run out and buy it with tomorrows paycheck.
