Union Navy Half-Strength Units?

Wed Oct 17, 2007 6:44 pm

Some Union Naval units (for example: African Scouting Squadron 8 / 16, USS San Jacinto 16 / 31, USS Saint Louis 16 / 31) don't seem to get to 'full strength'. I can fully rest them, but they are still 'half-strength' units. Do they ever get 'replacements'? Can I merge them?

I like to 'hover' over a stack to determine if it's time to cycle them to a home port for rest / refit: those ships foul up a nice stack... so I stack them together and put them in a backwater... Maybe I'm just too OCD :siffle:

They are single ships of a type (brigs or frigates) that normally are formed into two-ship squadrons. Unfortunately, they are not mergeable.

Also some of the blockade squadrons are short of the full complement, but show a full strength value of a full blockade squadron. This makes it confusing when trying to replenish them and not knowing what is their actual full strength.

Actually, I've successfully merged 2 'single-Frigate' units by selecting both and doing 'ctrl-C'. Haven't tried two 'single-brig' units.

Are under-strength naval units supposed to rebuild missing elements?

Uhm, naval units don't have replacements? :)

The use war supplies to repair damaged elements, but I don't know what happens with completely missing elements?

You can't 'replace' ships, this is on purpose. And you don't use up replacements (that you don't have!) to repair ships. It works as Rafiki says for repairs. To compensate for ship sunks, you either have to merge 2 units into a single one, or if you can't, you bite the bullet ;)

OK, fair enough :)

Jabberwock has a good point, though; it would be nice to have a way of seeing that a under-strength naval unit has gotten all its subunits fully repaired. Prhaps something a la

Code: Select all

8/8 (16)

where the first number is current strength, second number max strength with current elements and last number is TO&E full strength?

thanks lodi for the 'Ctrl-C' tip - I had heard of merging units but didn't know how. The frigate squadrons merged nicely (i.e., USS John Adams / Constellation).

But, umm, is there a way to 'un-merge'? I went merge-happy (mega blockade flotilla - NY and NE)... no harm done of course, just curious.

Note that the 9/16 brigs (Africa Squadron, NY Squadron?) don't want to merge - I guess an 18/16 unit would bother me as much as an understrength unit. Bullet biting in process...

Nope, merging is final; no way to split a unit that has been merged.

Has anyone tried merging a 9/16 with an 8/16? I know this sometimes works with militia that have upgraded to volunteers. i.e. You can merge a volunteer with a militia, but can't merge two volunteers (unless you can do it using ctrl+c?). Unfortunately, I'm nowhere near the game at the moment.
