Dumb Question #2

Wed Jul 11, 2007 12:45 am

I'm working my way through the tutorial and have a question regarding transfering a unit from one command to another. My limited knowledge indicates that I have to disband the ENTIRE command where it is starting from to move it elsewhere. Tell me that I've misunderstood this and there is an easier way ? Seems kinda overkill to disband a multi-unit command to get (say) one unitm, then have to re-combine the rest........

If I understand you correctly, the answer is... you are right.

To move a unit (lets say a Bde) from one unified command A (lets say a Division) to another Division B, you have to 'disband' A with the - icon to get to the Brigade. Then drop the Bde. onto B's force. Then Ctrl Click on the Division B icon & the Bde icon. Then use the + icon to add the Bde to B.
You can the recombine what's left of A with the + icon in the same way. There is no game cost to the recombination.
I think everyone agrees it's a bit more of a hassle than it should be, but it you used to it pretty quick and it doesn't slow you down much. I'm usually overly sensitive to these types of interface annoyances, but I don;t find this one too bad.Maybe it's because I need to spend a lot of time thinking before I click anyway...

Hope that helps.

For a division, you have to disband it temporarily to detach a unit, yes. You can reassemble it the same turn at no cost, minus the unit you subtracted.

ok, I show my inexperience for the game/UI .....

The display at the bottom shows the units. If I have a division with a boat load of units and want 1 unit out to go elsewhere. I disband the division. I'm guessing the display won't always be big enough to show ALL the newly independent units at one time. How do I convinently grab ALL but the one that I want elsewhere to re-combine the division ?

I guessing there is a really good reason (software-wise) they did it this way, because it seems easier for the user to only grab the one unit you want and transfer it .... Or an I overlooking something ?

You can select multiple units by Ctrl-Click on each one you want to move.A little siver border appears around each selected icon. It's subtle, but it's there. You can then drag just 1 of those icons into your other force, and all of themm will transfer over. Or, if you want to recombine rather than move them, justt make sure your divison leader if also ctrl-clicked, then press the + icon.
Or is this not what you want?

Reminder.

If you break down a division led by an inactive leader you will NOT be able to rebuild it that turn.

No, it should works if he had previously Divisional Command enabled.

The last time I did it, which was several 'mini' patches ago, I had the issue described.

I'll try it again.
