Why can you split brigades up but not recombine them?

Tue Apr 24, 2007 10:13 pm

Leaders start as brigades with units that can be split but you cant put them back together after you do so?

Generally I think you can. For example, the Schurtz cavalry, I'm able to seperate and combine them at will.

Sometimes the artillery does not fit back in. Any of the large New York Brigades, when split, only recombine if you leave out the artillery. Interestingly enough, the artillery that comes with the NY Zouave Brigade will fit into the New York Large brigade, but not the original New York Large Brigade artillery (even though both are 6lb).

Maybe has something to do with the State of origin of the elements of the units. I think i see that artillery that comes with the Large NY brigades has a PA state of origin on it, which may be causing some trouble.

Me neither, so I took a break for awhile and am doing some Middle Earth and waiting for more ACW books and Tolkien's just published Children of Hurin (1st Age story) to arrive. Darn compooter really bothers my eyes too, all two of them. :8o:

there are two issues here, the code is ready to fix them, but the data base is still in the work.

1. adding back a leader from an infantry brigade

2. splitting completely a formation

So, if I understand correctly, there is a problem here and it will be fixed. I'd give my left arm for a user-friendly, functional method to manage the command structure (for lack of a better term) in both AACW and FoF. The "container" system of grouping units in FoF is a pain. So far I've just tried the first tutorial in AACW, but so far the method used here doesn't strike me as being especially user-friendly. There has to be a better way.

Hi, Yeah, a drag and drop method would be OK for AACW if this method would include regiments and batteries within and without brigades and not just Brigades, divisions and corps as I think it does now. If AACW could dispense with, do away with having to split and disband Brigades, and divisions etc. and simply use a drag and drop method that will work with individual regiments, battalions, and batteries then this would be very efficient and easy.

The FoF method is really not too bad now that somethings were fixed and it is fairly easy. problem is that in both games when you are dealing with Army and Corps structures/units there are a large number of subordinate units that makes it difficult to find a good way to display and arrange all these units on the screen.

Didn't know we could split Brigade sized units.
Loaded up a game to test this, learn something new everyday.

My question is why would you?
The game organizes brigades for you. Why do you want to split them?
Is it to take all the Cav out of the individual brigades to combine into a larger Cav unit, same with arty?
Is that what you guys are doing? Or to rotate damaged elements with new elements?

From my understanding, the game wasn't really designed to be played like that.
The brigades are built by the game engine to specifically aviod micro-management.

Any dividing and combining below the Division level isn't really required.
You are just adding more frustration that isn't the games fault.

I'm confused now so someone please straighten me out on this.
Seems like I missed an entire level of this game.

Split up Brigades??? HOW???? I click on a brigade and I don't get the icon lit up that allows you to split a brigade. Heck, I formed a Division with Ben Huger and can't even split that all the way. I can split a few units off, but then the division counter and a couple Va. Militia stay inside Huger's counter. It won't split all the way. I could make a corps with him, after promotion, of ocurse, but it won't let me split the division up so I'm not gonna bother promoting him.

Hmmm, I haven't played AACW for a couple/few days, so maybe you can't split up Bdes. but I thought and wish you could.

Reason I want to be able to move units in and out of Bdes. is to either reinforce them with new units, concentrate my depleted units into one organization and stick that particular organization into a city where is has a better chance of being filled with replacements, plus, some Bdes. are not accurate and I like to diddle with these things.

If a game is etup fairly accurately at its start, once it gets going then the player sould b avle to take control of units in brigades, etc.

Chris

PS: Also, in a game, it is good and fun to be able to have a player structrue his forces, and this is historical due to the fact that the armies of both sides were in a constant stae of organiztional flux, with units coming and going and being transferred from one higher organization to another.

Has anyone an answer for this?

I created 2 Divisions. One for Bragg and One for Huger. Now both of them have been promoted to two star. I would like to make them Corps Commanders. You can't, as I understand it as long as they are division commanders. Now when I click on Huger's Icon (all his subordinates light up above him), the "-" sign lights up also to break him down. I have 6 or 7 subs under him, including the divisional unit. When I click the "Unit Divide" button, 4 of them will split off, but the "Huger Division" unit, and two Militia units stay attached to Huger, and I can't form a corps with him!!!!

Anyone know what to do????
