Unit upgrades

During the course of the war unit types will upgrade to more advanced types if i understand correctly. like early war infantry to late war infantry etc with certain totally new types of units also appearing later in the war. Do these upgrades happen randomly and totally out of control of the player? or can you impact the speed of these changes, like by making sure that you have sufficient war materials in stock.

Most upgrades will be done automatically (although a bit randomly) during the course of the war. This is handled via scripted events (same for militia or conscript training)
