installation problems

Mon Dec 06, 2010 5:08 am

Hi - I've had major problems installing this game since I bought it last week. Now on my 7th install. I have Windows 7, and installed it in non-program files directory.

What happens is that I install, enter serial key, and then the game opens correctly. When I close the game and attempt to reopen it, nothing happens - I double click the desktop icon multiple times, click the startup icon, and after a few minutes of "thinking" the computer gives up. I then uninstall, delete files, and try it all again - works the first time, then doesn't work.

Any ideas here?

Thanks, Jeff

Never heard of this one. Do you try opening from the installation .exe? I've had some major trouble with the steam shortcut for Metro 2033 lately and have to go in and actually start the game manually from the install folder.

Vista and Win7 have brought new "User Account" controls that create nightmares for some applications.

I run Vista, and this is how I do it:

1. De-activate your UAC [how-to at: http://www.ageod-forum.com/showthread.php?t=11621&highlight=disable+UAC ]
2. Uninstall the game
3. Use Explorer to find "AGEod's American Civil War" folder under Program Files.
4. Delete the "AGEod's American Civil War" Directory and all it contains [you will lose saved games]
5. Reinstall AACW, but change the default directory box to read "C:\AGEOD\AGEod's American Civil War" [or any hard drive you wish]
6. Download the latest patch from: http://www.ageod-forum.com/forumdisplay.php?f=107
7. Extract the patch file and run it [it should automatically go to the "C:\AGEOD\AGEod's American Civil War" location]
8. Run AACW

I've given this advice to many users, for all AGE games, and seems to work for them....

Key points:
1. Disable UAC
2. Do not install in Program Files directory (step 5)
Always ask yourself: "Am I part of the Solution?" If you aren't, then you are part of the Problem!

You should try to double click on the exec file in the programme directory just to check the game is actually installed correctly. Then point the shortcut to it manually by right clicking on the icon. If that doesnt work it may need administrator rights to work again via the right click menu on the shortcut. Other than that I would disable the UAC (user account control) via the action centre of the control panel which will probably sort all manner of problems for you as the UAC is well known as being the biggest pain in Win 7 when installing programs.
