Question on Frontage

Hi all, and sorry if this topic has been raised before, but this is an important aspect to understand in this game.
But after reading the manual I am stumped on figuring out frontage.

How does one go about calculating:
1) Unit Frontage
2) the Frontage Rating for an area

This has continually stumped me in the past, and as a result the AI thrashes me in battle - while moving directly through areas I occupy with forces.

Answers would be greatly appreciated,
