South London?
Reminds me of the looks I used to get travelling in states like Georgia and Missisippi. People would ask where I was from in a friendly way. I would say "I am from the south too!" They would smile, but it would turn to a frown when I followed up to say "Southern California!"
US Southerners have a jealously guarded notion of what is, and is not, authentic "southern." Beware!
I have heard people from the north of England have a similar regional pride. I have seen the soccer scarf, for example, for Manchester United. It says "Pride of the North!"
I got the scarf when I was in a soccer gear super store in England once (they call it football over there). It was in London as a matter of fact. Knowing what I was doing, somewhat mischievously, in a loud voice so everyone could hear, I said to the store owner: "I want to buy the scarf for the best team in Britain - which would that be?" Boy, you could have heard a pin drop in that place, it was like the old EF Hutton commercials. Then he said Manchester United and everyone relaxed.
