Just a little suggestion - instead of deleting the post with the previous Quickfix just replace the link with a link to the post with the new Quickfix. This will result in a chain of links to the latest QF. This would also easily allow Pocus to once link a QF in the first post and we will always be able to find the latest one.

Just make sure to read only the first two posts unless you want to read a giant argument between bigus and Gray.

I am a little confused about the "Army in Manassas" event and McDowell being able to move his army early, Late June, and the McDowell active mode. It looks like these above changes along with the odd placement of the CSA armies allows the Union to occupy Manassas without significant opposition.

I wasn't tracking both sides since I didn't expect the outcomes I saw but here is what it looks like 1.14 version sets up:

McDowell can apparently move his army to Manassas in Late June turn although he isn't activated he can still move his army into the region since there is only a militia unit there.

Joe Johnston is in Winchester and if I had known McDowell could march in that early I would have moved him down. I doubt he could stop it since McDowell only needed to move one region while Joe had two. Even if he got there I doubt it would have any affect on the outcome since he would be badly out numbered lacking Jackson's big brigade.

Speaking of Jackson he is on the map but useless since his brigade is at 20% strength.

Beauregard in the mean time has to take a train from Richmond where his army starts to try to get to Manassas in time. This mostly results in a one sided defeat for him since he arrive with McDowell already there in defensive mode.

All this is very ahistorical since Jackson's brigade was 8,000 strong and in Harpers Ferry in April. He retreated to Winchester in May when Paterson's force moved accross the river. Joe Johnston's army was formed around Jackson's, they shouldn't have been shown separated.

In April Beauregard's army of 15,000 was in Alexandria not Richmond. He fell back to Manasas in June when McDowell force finally exceeded his.

It seems at the very least the Beauregard's army is missplaced and Jackson's brigade should be full strength in Winchester.

I don't know about the rest of your post, but the reason Jackson is at 20% is because the Army still feeds of your replacement pool. And the game give you free Militia and Reg INF units. However Jackson's troops are elite so you have to buy the replacements yourself, which is a good investment. Not sure if that was an over site, but thats how it is.

kwhitehead:

I have just recently played through the "Army in Manassas" event in a PBEM game. So if what you describe is against the AI then I would say it's a whole different game! (And of course what I'm about to describe you can disregard).

But for the Union to occupy Manassas without any opposition in early June is NOT true, in my case against a human player anyway. I held it briefly in early June with a Bde under Keyes Cmd but was quickly refused by Bushrod Johnson coming up and pushing me out.
And yes, you can move McDowell into Manassas early (assuming Bushrod is not there and only a militia), but you will suffer either a huge command penalty or have to manipulate forces into individual bdes and send them there basically piecemeal, (pretty NOT ahistorical I think). And you are putting up against the better generals and slightly better confederate units forming in the AoNV. This point in the game is the first real strategic/operational decision you have to make concerning how you want to fight the eastern theater. Push into Virginia and take Manassas and hold or blow the depot; sit in Alexandria to fill the ranks while braving the media and pressure from Washington; develop other COA's like flanking in the valley, amphibious assaults etc. This is where I really felt I was Lincoln and then McDowell, not just playing them in a game. (I know corny and stupid, I need to find a life!)

So, with the exceptions to the OoB's you pointed out; perhaps, no, definately!, it's different against the AI. I think this event is about as close to historical as it's gonna get. Plus I like the fact that it does not follow historical exactly. It would not be very challenging, or fun to play if we didn't have some 'levity' in our (the player's) courses of actions, IMHO.

One last thought. I am surmising for myself after several months of playing against the AI and then starting to play PBEM, that this game is best played against another human being. That is stating the obvious I know, but I am considering playing this game ONLY in PBEM!

Well, I hope I haven't offended. Just my $.02 :)

The only time I play the A.I anymore is to test new specific stratagies or learn game mechanics. It's not that its bad. Its just it can't compare to fighting another person.

Just to note on OOB discrepancies:

The more I research this area the more I start to despair concerning the opening moves of the april 1861 campaigns...

The starting organisation and placement of the main armies (Department of Pennsylvania under Patterson, Army of NE Virginia under McDowell, Army of the Shenandoah under Johnston, Army of the Potomac under Beauregard) in the east are abstractions and as such fine with me. Though Patterson's command for instance is missing between 1 and 3 of its brigades depending on the date one would want to represent (2 brigades joined in early July). To get all these forces up to strength one obviously has to see to sufficient replacements and passive stance, something easily learned after one's first game with under strength eastern units...

What I find to be more problematic are the setup of all regular forces (henceforth my pet-peeve though I'm working on modding this currently) which particularly affects play in the Trans-Mississippi. Today I found out the AACW situation in West Virginia is also quite different from the historic situation. I expect I will start looking into the entire setup some more, but will also have to try to identify 3-month volunteer units from 3-year volunteer units (in game terms "volunteer" and "regular" units respectively)...

Gray_Lensman wrote:To address the McDowell/Manassas issue, it was discovered that the 1861 April campaign incorrectly placed him and his army in Alexandria, VA on 1861/05/01. This is an historical error. McDowell and the starting core of his army did not move into Alexandria, VA until 1861/05/24. The next QuickFix will correct this oversight and this should bring the timing discrepancy back into alignment with the 1861 July Campaign Scenario. He is still "fixed" for 3 turns while he builds his army up to full strength. This in effect, allows for his first move to be 1861/07/15, the same turn as the 1861 July Campaign scenario, and pretty much in accordance with the historic move towards Manassas around 1861/07/20.

The scenario I am playing is the April with Kentucky one against another player not the AI. Jackson being elite would explain why he didn't come up to strength although I suspect he would still take most of May to be useable. The main problem I see is the timing. McDowell shouldn't be able to get his army to Manassas before Beauregard especially if it is set up as a major objective for points.

So, after all the fuss of last week, I must confess I am a bit confused about what are the issues that have been spotted in 1.14. Since it seems very likely that we are one step away from a "legacy" patch for AACW, maybe it would be good to try and summarize the reported remaining "engine" issues:

To start:

- The discrepancy between general's rank in the roster and in-game, spotted by akk70:
http://www.ageod-forum.com/showpost.php?p=152818&postcount=129

- The missing objective flags in Spanish 1.14a:
http://www.ageod-forum.com/showpost.php?p=153194&postcount=18

- the odd missing flag in the map ? (Madisonville, spotted by Chaplain Lovejoy):
http://www.ageod-forum.com/showpost.php?p=153499&postcount=1

- The wrong FI calculation with French intervention in Mexico, spotted by Big Ideas:
http://www.ageod-forum.com/showpost.php?p=152917&postcount=1

Non-issue: early cavalry ability to capture cities

Is this all ?

(PS: I am not saying that these issues are real, important, or whatever. I am just trying to make a summing up list)

Gray_Lensman wrote:If you'll reread the statement above that you quoted from me, you'll see that the issue has been addressed and will be available in the next QuickFix. Specifically, McDowell will NOT be able to make his first possible move until 1861/07/15. This now allows for 2 extra turns for the CSA to position Beauregard up to Manasssas. It will be up to you as the player to both BUY enough replacement points to build up both Beauregard's and Johnston's army's and move them into place. Incidentally, I tested this out twice last night and generally got them into place one turn ahead of McDowell's move on 1861/07/15. (It could not be done before the QuickFix change however.)

Knowing the above I agree, it shouldn't be difficult to recreate the Manassas historic situation. Any idea yet as to when the quick fix will be available?

Now to bring up a new issue but I am very unsure on this one since I haven't yet gotten a good grasp on how the naval system works.

Just to see what would happen if the CSS Virginia tried to go out and fight the Monitor I sent it out into Hampton Roads where the Monitor was. The way the game is set up it must apparently have to go through the James River zone first adjacent to Ft. Monroe. Ft. Monroe got 40 hits on it and apparently sunk it since it disappeared. This illustrates a couple of possible problems:

First, did Fort Monroe's gun really dominate the James River entrance?

Are those guns really powerful enough to sink an ironclad?

And, can't we get a better information message on the log for naval results?
(If I hadn't been trying to find out what happen I would have never spotted the bombardment engagement on the log and I only new it had sunk a ship because I couldn't find it.)

As the CSA, I find that it is EXTREMELY difficult to get ships past Fort Monroe. Much more often than not, you are sunk!

I too experienced a very nasty crash with 1.14QF1a -- very similar in that I restarted game, replayed turn, crashed again ... the 3rd time was the charm, though ... I got past it. It was May '63 -- logs and the like sent to Pocus via the in-game provision.

v1.14 QuickFix2 Installer patch

Mon Jul 27, 2009 1:17 am

Here's the next QuickFix now called QuickFix2.

I specifically posted this QuickFix to address the 1861 April Campaign McDowell-Manassas/Bull Run placement timing, but there was some other work already in place to accompany it.

Again Note: QuickFix patches are designed to be overlaid over the current comprehensive v1.14 patch and/or over the follow up earlier v1.14 QuickFixes.

Special Note for our multilingual Spanish community members, these v1.14 quickfixes can also be applied before/after your HotFixed v1.14a version that we released recently for your specific CTD issue.

Link to v1.14 QuickFix2: http://www.mediafire.com/?tiz1znfzgly

Current list of QuickFix changes:

1.) Bombardment Button Tooltip reworked to properly describe the Button action and the Button action is:
a.) If the Button is Depressed = Bombardment is selected and the Tooltip states "Your units have orders to bombard any passing ships."
b.) If the Button is NOT Depressed = Bombardment is NOT selected and the Tooltip states "Click to Bombard passing ships with your units."

2.) Reworked graphic glitch in the "Winter_563Montgomery, TN.bmp" (Nashville graphic) file.

3.) The structure for Rome, GA located in the Floyd, GA region has been shifted slightly northward.

4.) All 12 lbers reclassified as $famLightArty. (negligible effect in game except to effect a fix for the missing element replacement bug AND some redistribution of replacement costs due to it now being classified a light artillery unit instead of a medium artillery unit.

5.) Total number of allowable CSA divisions increased by 10 if Foreign Intervention occurs. ((specifically equal to 40 for now) was 30).

6.) USA Military Balloons event places the first USA balloon in Washington, D.C. (was with largest military unit). This eliminates an erratic placement problem.

7.) Carl Shurz and accompanying Cavalry unit correctly appear in New York, NY in 1862/04/12 (was 1861/04/12).

8.) John Marmaduke appears in 1862/12/01 and now has the "Cavalryman" ability. (was 1865/03/18)

9.) Bushrod Johnson now correctly appears with the 1862 Generals. Also removed Bushrod Johnson from both the 1861 July and 1861 July w-KY scenarios. (was with the 1861 Generals)

10.) Charles Winder now appears with Thomas J. Jackson on 1862/05/15. (was in the 1861 Generals group)

11.) William Taliaferro now appears with Thomas J. Jackson on 1862/08/09. (was in the 1862 Generals group)

12.) The following generals will now have alternate appearance locations if the General they were supposed to show up with is not in the current OOB.
...CSS Charles S. Winder primarily with Thomas J. Jackson, secondary at Richmond (Richmond, VA), alternates at VA, NC, SC in that order.
...CSS William B. Taliaferro primarily with Thomas J. Jackson, secondary at Richmond (Richmond, VA), alternates at VA, NC, SC in that order.
...USA William T. Sherman primarily with Ulysses S. Grant, secondary at Cairo (Alexander, IL), alternates at IL, IN, OH in that order.
...USS Alexander McCook primarily with Don Carlos Buell, secondary at Cincinatti (Clermont, OH), alternates at OH, IN, IL in that order.
...USS L. Rousseau primarily with Don Carlos Buell, secondary at Cincinatti (Clermont, OH), alternates at OH, IN, IL in that order.

13.) Barnard Bee properly replaced by H. Bee in the 1863 Campaign Scenario. (Barnard Bee was killed in 1861 at Manassas (Bull Run)).

14.) Corrected/Reworked numerous duplicate leader appearances

15.) Reworked Indian Raider units to have the *NoCapture* attribute. (Inadvertantly omitted in v1.14)

16.) In both 1861 April Campaign Scenarios, McDowell & Army of Northern Virginia placed in Fairfax, VA 1861/05/24. (was 1861/05/01)

17.) In both 1861 April Campaign Scenarios, Removed pre-placed (at start) USA Alexandria Militia unit. It shows up later on 1861/06/16.

18.) In all the 1861 Campaign Scenarios, Wade Hampton's SC Legion is now a cavalry unit. (was an infantry unit)

Enjoy... Feedback appreciated.

I noticed that when entire divisions disappear due to supply, the general disappears too. I just played a couple scenarios when that happened, but I deleted them when I was done. I need to stop doing that :bonk: . Is this WAD?

Are you sure they dissapeared? They usually are locked because of injury and moved to a city or town.
