Losses in Battle

Tue Dec 26, 2006 1:08 pm

Hi, wanted to ask this question about losses. One of the things that Forge of Freedom does that really just ruins things for me sometimes is after a battle the losses are so one sided. Now having read numerous Civil War tomes :niark: about battles and campaigns in the Civil war I have very rarely seem losses of 5-1 or 10-1 after a major battle or for that matter even a minor fight. If 2 armies slug it out for a day I would think that looses would be fairly even and the winner not reaaly much better off than the loser? Will this be the war this engine handles it? If i win a battle but lose 20% of my force, I doubt i would be chasing anyone 3 provinces right away :8o:

Excellent point. To give just one obvious example, Chancellorsville was one of Lee's greatest victories, yet in that battle, he lost 13,000 men to Hooker's approximately 17,000 casualties.

Many data are still tweaked but generally when I'm testing battles, I see that both armies remains with most of their brigades alive, but with many regiments severely drained of their men, the winner having lost 50 to 70% of what the loser has lost (and both have lost quite cohesion too). But this happen on big battles, where both side has enough troops to saturate the battlefield (as we have some nice rules on how terrain can limits troops deployment). For smaller battles, results are more one-sided, but I would say it is realistic in this case.

Thanks Pocus, thats what I was hoping for. There can always be routes, but they should be rare in large scale battles.
