Thanks everyone for the quick reply. This forum is a great resource, and has really added to my enjoyment of the game.

I've noticed on the F1 screen that names will glow red and "throb." This leads me to think "Must be eligible for promotion." But checking the actual leader unit: promotion button not clickable. But one or two turns later, that leader WILL be eligible for promotion. It's like the red-throbbing name in F1 signals a promotion eligibility is on its way. Saw this with Lew Wallace. So...wherein doth my misunderstanding lieth? [Trying to use nineteenth-century English in the spirit of the game, but I think I'm ending up with seventeenth-century English.]

Promotion Issues

Sun Jan 25, 2009 9:04 pm

All-

Like KCDennis, I'm new to the game & am having promotion problems. I think I figured it out based on the previous posts, but still not sure. Bottom line, I've been through the turtorials & read the manual (at least 5 times). But, as I start my first real scenario (Shiloh), I can't get a corps commander because I can't find a 2-star that would work. I tried to promote Sherman, but it's still greyed out indicated while he's eligilibe, he still needs to earn his spurs before putting on another star.

Embarrassed that I have to ask such a basic question, but would appreciate the experts help.

Thanks!

"Can be promoted" doesn't signify the leader can be promoted immediatly. He has to get more seniroty ( 1 to 4) to be really promotable.

And to achieve that the leader must fight battles ... and win them.

To be a bit more specific, the leader must either:
  • Reach seniority 1 or 2, OR
  • Improve his seniority by 4 points

Figured It Out

Mon Jan 26, 2009 5:56 pm

Thanks fellas. Finally figured it out. Despite my not knowing the nuances of everything was able to win my first two scenarios (Shiloh) as USA.

In the first one Sidney Johnston pulled a Hood & charged up toward Nashville--never did make it to Bowling Green. Meanwhile, I captured Memphis & Corinth w/o much of a struggle.

2nd scenario, I made the difficulty level hard & was able squeak out a victory (same deal) by capturing an ill-garrisoned Memphis & Corinth on the last turn. Meanwhile, Buell was getting his butt kicked at every battle.

Were these games typical? What do most experienced players use for settings? I'll probably never have enough time to be an expert, but was wondering if anyone had some suggestions.

Great game & thanks for all the info on the website. My only big critque is the manual is rather lacking in details (not to mention the font size!).

I agree on the font size....

I was going to start a thread on promoting Generals when I came across this one....I too was not able to figure out how to promote a General but as I understand it you need the following:

1. General must get "congratulated" and move up in seniority due to winning battles....I have had a few of these in my Campaign game 1862 as USA.

2.He must get within the 1st - 4th General at the top to be promoted, even if eligible for promotion (Can be promoted-Yes).

3. He must be pulled out of a stack by himself (or can he still be leading his Brigade, or Division) so he can be promoted.

4. Once promoted, he can rejoin his parent Corp or Army, or start a new force.

5. To actually promote, what do you do to get the promotion?? Is it automatic, is there a button to push, or what??

6. I think I have figured out that Generals just suddenly appear when they are appointed (by the game script Im assuming, based on historical facts??). But some are "not activated" and some "are activated". Am I correct in that only "activated" 1* Generals can be formed into Divisions?? Why are some active and some not? How long does it take to become active? Once active are you always active??

7. To be Corps commander you have to be a 2* General, or promote to one. Then you can add 1* Generals and their Div's to each Corps, or single brigades or units (which if I am correct gives you the command penalties, right??).

Thanks for any clarifications to the above..
