Can enemy fleets be captured if Port City Taken?

Mon Jan 05, 2009 6:14 am

If land units attack an enemy port city where there is a naval ship, can the land units "capture" enemy ships there? Or does the enemy automatically "sail" away?

I have captured river ships with land forces - don't know about sea-going, though.

That's good to hear. Played a bit of this against AI, just started first PBEM. As the South I've just attacked Norfolk in first turn and hope to capture the naval ship there. I'm waiting for the playback. Was just wondering if this was even doable. Glad to see that it is.

There is a special event for this don't worry ;)
Next turn after taking Norfolk you will get the Virginia ironclad (in construction) as some other goodies (heavy arty mainly).
The capture of ships happens from time to time. But most of times (for my experience) vessels sail away.
Ships in construction on a port (just bought and still locked) should be captured always.

Hi Gray!
I was talking about game mechanics. Maybe i'm, wrong but i suppose that locked (because in construction or whatever) ships in towns taken by the enemy are captured. Like fixed/coastal guns.
Regarding history, yes, you are right. A lot of things can happen before they get captured.
But is there a event or a game mechanic for this?
Regards

Right!! As indeed was the Merrimac/Virginia! The Rebs salvaged it.

Ships can be captured. Twice in recent games I have captured ocean transports. Also many times I have captured river ships or ironclads in the process of being built.

Sorry I was unclear Gray. :(

I captured the transports in port. I know they were not being built because it was in retaking southern ports from the Union in one case. The other was after the siege/ assault on Ft Monroe. They were moving in reinforcements I assume, and got caught with their pants down by Macgruder. :)

Not saying I approve or disapprove. Just saying what happened. :)
