Rate of application of Replacements

Thu Jan 01, 2009 8:48 pm

Not sure whether to put this thread here or within the strategy forum.

The manual states:

"The replacement rate per turn, as a percentage of a unit’s full complement, is:

Base land unit recovery rate: 5%
Irregular: 10%
Depot: 20%
City: 10%
Fort: 10%
Indian village: 5%
Note: Union troops divide this rate by two, as field replacements were not a common practice for them.

Naval unit: 5%/port level "

This seems to be supported by what is quoted on the WIKI.

I am unsure (although I assume I know the answer - but I'll ask anyway)
1) whether this means that the single best rate quoted above applies to any given unit, or:
2) whether the rates are cumulative, i.e. a land unit (irregular) within a level 2 city with a depot will get a rate of 5+10+20+10=45%.
and:
3) do the units need to be inside the structure, i.e. city, deport or fort to receive the higher rate.

I assume 1) = Yes, 2) = No and 3) = Yes ?

The basis for my question comes from the initial forces given to the Union, 'At start and auto re-inforcement". Most importnantly, the Army of the Northeast, seems to me, takes a long time to achieve full strength (usually not until after the CSA make their first assaults). I was wondering if I was doing anything wrong, or whether this is by design, i.e. historically the Union were not ready?

I have also being looking to see how soon after game start the Union could build a depot in Alexandria (or even Washington). I note that Baltimore has a Depot, however the Army of the Northeast is locked for 3 turns after it arrives so could not make use of this facility until too late.

What do other peeple do to ensure the Army of the Northeast is fully prepared asap?

Without being able to quote definite knowledge of this, this is also my understanding of these questions :)

Regarding getting your army in the East battle-ready... If you put them on passive it will help a great deal. You shouldn't have to worry about any Confederate advance on those turns in which they are passive.

Also make sure you have the replacements to offer up to them.

Even with the above all working for you, I have found a few units still in the red. I think that that is just due to the Union troops halving the percentage they get back. You should have plenty of troops to do what you need at any rate. Now if you could just get some decent commanders... :D

The % are cumulative. You don't need to be in the structure to get the benefit of it.

Sorry Rafiki, but I think I will accept Pocus' answer as definative :)

Thanks for the 'heads-up' on the use of the 'Passive' posture to aid in unit recovery. I figured this out shortly after I had started the thread. As Homer would say.... D'Oh :bonk:

Nice to know that the replacement rates are cumulative :)

No worries; I'm accepting it as definitive myself :D
