Korrigan,
Can you add something to the FAQ about how the Save system works?
Here is an example using Primasprit's post as a guide. It may not be complete as I didn't have time to finish.
How does the Save Game system work?:
-The "Load Game Menu" will display
one savegame file set per campaign or scenario.
There will be a player file and an AI file. The files displayed will be from the last save made.
-The paperclip symbol represents a player mid-turn save or a restored backup**is this correct?
-All saved game files are stored in the "Saves" folder. (default path: C:\Program Files\AGEod's American Civil War\ACW\Saves)
-For every new campaign or scenario started, AACW will
automatically create a new savegame file folder within the "Saves" folder.
The new folder will have the same name as the campaign or scenario (ex: 1861 April Campaign, 1861 April Campaign01).
-When you end a turn, a savegame file set is
automatically created within it's folder.
-
All subsequent saves in that campaign or scenario will be stored in this folder.
-Every savegame file set consists of 4 files: 1 USA turn file and 1 CSA turn file (.trn); 1 master host file (.hst); 1 players orders file (.ord)
Example: 1861 April Campaign~USA.trn (USA turn file); 1861 April Campaign~CSA.trn (CSA turn file); 1861 April Campaign.hst (master file); a file with .ord (your orders file)
-A backup folder of the
previous savegame file set will be created
everytime you end a turn or manualy save the game.
It will be named "Backup1", "Backup2", Backup14" and so on.
How to Copy or Rename a saved game from within the game
(Of course you can do this manually from Windows also)
Following these steps will create an entirely new savegame folder set.
-You must be on the Main Map screen
-Hover the mouse over the Save Game icon, upper right corner, center icon, under the date.
-Follow the tooltip instructions. <Ctrl> + click the Save Game icon
-A "Rename this saved game to" box will open. Enter the desired name.
-Every subsequent save of this scenario or campaign wll be saved under this new savegame folder.
How to Restore old saves from the Main Menu
Caution!!: this will delete the previous save!!. Make a copy of the previous savegame file set!
-Open the Main Menu-Load Game screen
-Hover the mouse over the save file you wish to restore.
-Follow the tool-tip instructions. "Hit <Home> to restore the previous turn"
-This will
automatically delete the last savegame file set and restore the previous "Backup" folder savegame file set.
How to Restore old saves from Windows
-Navigate to the "Saves" folder. (default path: C:\Program Files\AGEod's American Civil War\ACW\Saves)
-Open the folder for the campaign or scenario you want to restore.
-There should be a few "Backup" folders. The highest numbered folder is the last backup.
-The 4 files not in a backup folder are the current savegame set. (Make a copy of these files if you wish)
Example: 1861 April Campaign~USA.trn (USA turn file); 1861 April Campaign~CSA.trn (CSA turn file); 1861 April Campaign.hst (master file); a file with .ord (your orders file)
-Copy and paste the contents of the desired Backup folder to overwrite these 4 files. This will replace the old save with the backup save.
