These gar can be dressed into gar "balls" (probably something like granny's salmon croquets Id think). I don't know the recipe, seeing as I've never made it.
The thing with gars is the skin and mouth are so tough its actually difficult to hook them, but Ive hooked a couple with fish grappling hooks. I think one method of catching them, with bait of course, is to fray a piece of rope for the end of your fishin line so that the gar's teeth become entangled in it.
The one in the picture is huge and is no where near being a typical gar alligator or common. I was shocked by it.
btw spoonbill cats caught with grappling hooks too.
