Someone, I think Gray, mentioned Gator Gars in another thread. They live in the Mississippi River, and they can eat alligators. This one features the human-torso-growing-out-of-the-back modification.

Yeah theres moccasins too!!!! (a type of real aggresive extremly poisoness snake) we didnt do much swimming in rivers there cuz of the snakes actually lol

It's for real. They are related to pike. They mainly eat catfish. One of the reference links in the wiki article leads to a site with six or seven recipes, but I prefer to just eat catfish straight without facing something like that. Can't find good fresh catfish in Massachusetts.

Lol...you n me probably grew up realtivly in the same neck of the woods, I didnt go after em cuz of the moccasins...am sure you are well aware of them?

When they was puttin' the cable teevee, every ditch crew had a shotgun for them moccasins. An' we had to pull fangs outta my brothers leg once, the fake leg fortunit like.

I caught a gar once. It was deep and tough to bring up. I was surprised when it finally came up to see it was a gar. Looks like a dinosaur fish...very ugly fish.

I actually grew up on Long Island ... city boy, but I spent a lot of summers in NC, and eventually moved there.

We didn't go swimming there more for the jellyfish than the mocs. In really hot summers we'd get gators swimming up the coast.

Actually I'm a terrible fisherman. But my neighbors had a catfish farm. I used to catch them with breadcrumbs.

You don't want to catch one. I very carefully got the hook out and released it because they have a very impressive set of sharp teeth.

I just looked them up on wiki and apparantly they are a dinousaur fish that have been around since the Permian age. They are only found in North America now and are related to the Pike.

Catching one was enough for me.

I just looked up the Permian Age which was 300 million years ago. The Permian Age was pre-dinosaur!!! Which makes the Gar pre-dinosaur also!!

A very, very, very old species of fish. Next time I see a Gar, I am going to look at it a little closer while remaining out of range of its teeth.

These gar can be dressed into gar "balls" (probably something like granny's salmon croquets Id think). I don't know the recipe, seeing as I've never made it.
The thing with gars is the skin and mouth are so tough its actually difficult to hook them, but Ive hooked a couple with fish grappling hooks. I think one method of catching them, with bait of course, is to fray a piece of rope for the end of your fishin line so that the gar's teeth become entangled in it.
The one in the picture is huge and is no where near being a typical gar alligator or common. I was shocked by it.
btw spoonbill cats caught with grappling hooks too.
