Ageod Korean War??

Thu Jun 11, 2009 6:26 pm

There's been a lot of discussion about maybe doing a Vietnam based game, but what about the Korean War? The time-scale over three years makes it much better for a two week turn, and to the best of my knowledge there are no other Korean war based strategy games in existence.

Scenarios could include the initial North Korean onslaught, the Busan pocket, the invasion at Incheon, the advance to the Yalu, right up to the armistice. The wide variety of different characters and nations who fought on both sides would make it interesting, it would also enable us to see early jet combat and things like Russian T-34s attacking American Shermans.

The engine would have to be similar to WW1, as the mountainous terrain wouldn't allow for a ACW or BOA style, and the war of attrition in the later years of the war would match well.

What do you think?

I remember playing a strategic Korea game a few years back, I think it was a scenario made with the TOAW engine. It was pretty good - well worth a go. On a lower level there is HPS's Korea '85 and I think Matrix will release a Campaign Series version in a year or so (I hope so as I spent ages making a Yongsan scenario for it). At squad level there is the HPS Squad Battles game.

I agree that it could be an interesting war for AGEOD to think of covering (the scale is pretty good for the AGEOD engine). The last few years may get a little boring - but with a lot of what if's and options it could be a good game to make. I would worry that it may end up as a war of attrition though - a bit like Italy in WW2 - two armies just pressing up against each other (personally there are a lot of other games I would rather see first).

Give me a war in the Med - the Punic wars. Might be a nightmare to program for the AI but great for the PBEM player :)

Hi!
Regarding games about the korean war...
Have you tried the excellent Korea scenario from The Operational Art of War TOAW)??
One of the best scenarios of that game (and it has hundreds of scenarios!) :coeurs: :coeurs:

I'm now thinking I didn't read your post very well

Yes maybe with the WW1 engine it could be very good!

Well, I really think it is a step forward into a more "modern" war... so, that means that a lot of new things needs to be added to the engine. ;)

Please note that WW1 is not an Ageod's engine game.
Currently Ageod's engine is well suited for pre-WW1 games where aviation (the 3rd dimension) isn't present so a game about Korean War would certainly impose a major overhaul.
