Good times for being a PC gamer

Mon Sep 29, 2008 7:01 pm

I, and certainly lots of you guys have already read n times that PC gaming is dying. Nevertheless, I have come to realize that seldom if ever, in the last 20 years of my gaming experience have I had so much good games available or coming that give me FUN. It is true that many are more or less the work of small/independent companies, but maybe that's why they are so good ? ;)
Of course AGEOD has produced a dream-come-true game in AACW that I intend to keep playing for many, many years. VGN and the upcoming WWI game look also to be a blast.
But I also like other kinds of games, and there are plenty good ones:
- Tatical combat with Take Command 2nd Manassas (and Norb is working on another iteration of tactical 19th century battles, "war3D")
- 4X space games do not get any better than GalCivII and their expansions.
- RPG: With NWN and NWN2 and the multitude of available mods, I have role-playing material until old age
- Mount and Blade: a small gem. Think Elite with swords, horses and castles...

If only I had more spare time... :(

So, if this is the end of PC gaming, it's certainly a great "last Hurrhah".

What do you think ?

War gaming, and historical gaming, never saw it so good. The death of PC war/historical gaming? No way!

The console games, which a supposedly killing PC games, are generally about flashy graphics. If you want a serious strategic game stick with a PC, for the forseeable future.

Plus, a PC game with depth is entertainment at a bargain price considering the initial investment versus the hours of diversion it gives you. Especially when you stack it up against attending a sports event or even the movies nowadays.

However, games like these do demand a mature attention span, historical curiosity and patience. Hopefully those attributes will still be around for a while.

Do not forget some great titles:

- Il2, LOck-on, for Airwarfare sims.

- Silent Hunter, for Sea warfare Sim.

-ARMA: Armed Assault, for groung warfare simulation.

-Total War series, Warhammer Mark of Kaos, in the RTS games.

-Oblivion and The Witcher, in RPG games.

Then, we cannot forget PhilThib's Europa Universalis series.

Indeed some of then are worth for the great sim level or historical accuracy, other ones for the great graphic level they introduced, some other ones for the great times of full enjoyement offered!
