how do they work? where do you put them?

I put them in the trade boxes and they "seem" to bring in money.

I thought that's what fregates and fleets did, but that privateers actually brough money. Am I mistaken ?

Where do you guys find these answers? I can not find any discussion of this in the manual. For example everyone talks about scripted events and when they fire off. Where is the list of potential events? Is it by country? Are there events I should be aiming for? I know some history but some of this is way more detailed than I ever studied.
