It seems to me that in most campaigns they would generally advance, push back the enemy and eventually pin them in battle...in my game experience, the French are marching right thru a well defended province and moving onto a strategic point to the defenders rear without even so much as saying "excuse me"...
the "feel" of it doesn't seem quite right....all this to say that the lines are certainly very porous...
