Modding Generals

Thu Jan 14, 2016 5:20 am

IMHO Ney is given the short end of the stick and I would like to raise his strategic rating to 4 instead of 3. I can open his file just fine with notepad but when I go to save it I get a pop up that says 'Access Denied'. This happens when I try to save any file I have changed not just Ney's.

Does anyone have any idea how I can saved modified files without getting this result?

It's a windows permission issue. Right click on the directory (or Wars of Napoleon) and click on security. Give yourself full control and click apply and you shouldn't have anymore issues.

First you go to the directory where you installed the game - normally C:Program Files (x86)/Matrix Games/Wars Of Napoleon.
Then you open the NGC folder, then the Gamedata folder, then finally Models.
If you press control + F you can type in the name of the general you want to mod.
Open the file you want to mod using Notepad and then you can mod whatever you wish.
I think the maximum you can raise strategic, offensive and defensive rates to is 7.
You can find different abilities in the Abilities folder inside the Gamedata folder. Be warned that abilities need to be added correctly. To do this to a general with no abilities add the line Ability0 = $abi to the record after the line SupCbtPen = 0 and add the desired ability at the end of the new line. The second ability should be titiled Ability1 = $abi, the third should be Ability2 = $abi and the forth Ability3 = $abi
As far as I can tell a general can have a maximum of four abilites unless he has one of the genius abilities.
Abilities need to also be named correctly. An easy way to determine what name a certain ability uses - open the abilites folder, double click on an ability then copy and paste the name directly after the line Alias = abi.
Some of the abilities are only meant for certain units and not for generals so watch out for that.
Once you are done modding save the file then delete the models.cached file at the bottom of the models folder.
Just to be on the safe side, delete the units.cached file at the bottom of the units folder.
Then start a new game with your new generals.
