MOD - smaller graphics for cavalry / infantry units

Sun Sep 07, 2014 12:08 pm

I am very nitpicky about small visual inconsistencies, like a unit a little too large or not centered. I also generally found the infantry units with just the upper torso was not the best way. I went on to make a mini mod which is easy to do because EAW contains many more graphics in /Portraits, and I used these as a base.

update 2014-09-22 complete pack: TAW_Graphics_v100 Base.zip

That's all you need. the older versions are kept but just for archiving purposes.

I have rescaled and resized most graphics to better match with each other. The aim is that the unit graphics are all centered and of matching size.
Unlike the first version I tried to keep discipline and release only the original graphics from Ageod, not mixed up with any silly things I made. That's why it is called "Base pack". If some altered file should have creeped in, I beg your forgiveness :)

Older versions (should not be mixed or installed with v100 because the units are not the same size!)

older versions are kept but just for archiving purposes

Base pack: Graphics 1 Smaller All_Factions v3.zip
optional: Additional changes to the Russian and Serbian guns (install this after the base pack): Graphics 2 Russia_Serbia v1.zip

install files in the same order as above!

If you like it, copy the graphic files in your Graphic/Units/Land Units directory and restart the game. Use JSGME or create backup first

Resized infantry and cavalry graphics for all units and all factions

All guns and vehicles were centered so that they look better side by side

Additional changes to the Russian and Serbian guns

Changed files assigments, guns face in the same direction (per faction), centered etc.

I made some more changes, tried to correctly center all guns graphics. I like more that way so they dont seem to jump up and down.

All changes are already included in the original downloads.

I could think of a few other things that could be changed (various units could be made smaller)
but enough for today.

Hi GlobalExplorer,

this looks very good. Fine work.
As one example, the entire uniform here the infantrymen can see.

Michael

I am just re-arranging Ageods files here, all praise belongs to the original artists

My aim is that all graphics are more or less centered and of the same size.

Of course, my praise also goes to the original artists.
The game is lovingly arranged.
When I first saw by loading the coal shovel in the games,
I was totally entranced.
Your improvement is also a good idea.

GlobalExplorer, what's the purpose of the Unitmbs.db file?

Shit, this is an artifact of the renaming process.

Thats because i have renamed the files with a program. The first 3 characters "mdl" is replaced with "Unit". So "thumbs.db" becomes "Unitmbs.db"
thumbs.db itself is the preview images that windows creates
delete the file wherever you see it. It should do no harm if you don't but it does not belong there.

I think if some people want to use the mod I will make a version with the remaining graphics.
The vehicles should also look more orderly when centered, and some items still look a little too large (wagons for example).

Something that I would like to do in the future is change all graphics so that the units all face to the same side.
It somehow irritates me if they are mixed. Western Entente would naturally look to the right, Eastern to the Left.
CP is a good question but perhaps Germany face to the left (West), Austria and Turkey to the right (East).

If you just mirror the soldiers, at the end you have an unusual amount of left handed soldiers!

I have uploaded some new files for CEP powers, see first post.

The aim was to replace a few of my "unloved" graphics like the KuK infantry or German colonial troops :) But his is by no means finished and ahistoric uniforms are accepted when necessary.

Cool, but keep in mind I did this only as a cookbook how it can be done and a stopgap until more patches have been released.
I expect everything has to redone from scratch one day, because the patches will update graphics.

I think that perhaps a few new images could be introduced to this or other mods. Does somebody have good color images of large guns, Big Berthas and such? Good drawings of soldiers + uniforms that could be used in the game?

Books by Liliane et Fred Funcken are quite mythical (L'Uniforme et les Armes des Soldats de la Guerre 1914-1918) but imho Massi's illustrations are great and fits the need.

I have made a complete version in which now all files should be centered and matching. See first post.

I actually made everything from scratch so that all infantry units are roughly 96 pixels high. Then, if some unit looked too small I made it a few pixels bigger until all files matched. The same with centering them.

A few little mistakes will always creep up, but this should be close to a final version.

Love the mod. I've noticed that the Ukrainian flag on the Russian divisions is inverted once the division is built. Not sure if this mod caused it?
