British battleships

Fri Aug 29, 2014 7:53 pm

Being something of a battleship anorak  , I notice that some of the British battleships in TEAW are of the wrong type. Specifically, the entire King Edward VII class - King Edward VIII (sic), Hibernia, Commonwealth, Africa, Zealandia, Dominion, Britania (sic), and Hindustan - are all shown as Dreadnoughts when in fact they were pre-Dreadnoughts (called 'steel battleships' in the game). The same applies to HMS Russell (Duncan class). This is not a trivial difference; pre-Dreadnoughts were not usually considered suitable for service with the battle-fleet (although the Germans used some at Jutland). They were usually employed for secondary roles such as convoy escort and shore bombardment. Perhaps this can be corrected with the next patch?

For those interested in this subject, I cannot recommend highly enough 'British Battleships 1889-1904' and 'British Battleships of World War 1', both by R A Burt. They are full of superb photographs and are very reasonably priced! :D

One thing I was astonished about is how the two Queen Elisabeth class squadrons under construction fill out with names of other Dreadnought or Battleship classes (either meaning ships starting on map are misnamed, or the list of ship names used to name new elements is in the wrong order). It's cosmetic, but annoying...

P.S.: For land forces the naming (and abstraction) issues are of course worse...

Not differentiating between Dreadnoughts and Pre-Dreadnoughts is a major simplification that can only damage the game. Not impressed!

The game does differentiate between them, it's just that the ships in question are shown as the wrong type. Rather easy to fix, I would have thought. :)

I agree, it's rather disappointing. :(
