Unit names missing from cards in single regiment units

Wed Sep 17, 2014 12:40 pm

When I recruit a single regiment unit (such as militia or artillery), the card no longer gives the name of the unit - instead just giving the units class (for example "Vol." or "Roodman Art.") and state (for example, "(NY)"). I am playing the vanilla game (except a larger card deck via changing the parameters in the Front end folder of the Structures, Decisions, and Recruit Panels but not the Stack Panel as you can see) with the new patch (ie I haven't updated/installed any mods).

I wonder if it's missing something in the default database. I just started digging into that stuff the other day. Are there "long" and "short" name fields for units, or anything like that?

I think the units and models databases are mostly the same as before the patch (certainly there are some changes, and big thanks to Captain_Orso for a lot of these). You are right, the ShortName field from the units db is being used here where I was expecting to see the CustomName field. Maybe this is WAD, but I doubt it because the CustomName field is still used for brigades with more than one regiment.

May be a missing/mismatched single quote ('), then.
Also, doesn't the CustomName override the other fields?

I'm not sure. Do you/others not have this problem, then?

I haven't really tried it out yet. Still poking around with the files, trying to learn things.
Past experience with similar systems tells me that all fo the above is a distinct possibility, though.

I guess this is WAD, but I don't really like it. The new way it works is that if a unit name is too long to fit on a card in the stack, it is shortened to the short name of the unit type. I think people like having a somewhat unique name so that it is easier to keep track of a unit at a glance.

I know that I do.
Of course, what do you do with long names? Truncate them? What exactly are we proposing, here?

Before the current patch, unit names longer than the space available on the cards were just cut off, so any letters that were too long for the card simply didn't show up. I thought that was fine.

I've discovered that up to "v1.04 RC6PB" the naming still works correctly.

Starting with "v1.04 RC7PB" the unit names go astray.

Is this going to be switched back for the next patch? The fun of my more historical unit names mod is cut significantly by this change, so I'd like to know if it is being switched before I decide to update the mod for the new patch(es) (by the way, any way my unit names mod work could be integrated into the main game?).

I have still not reached this point in the CW2 backlog, being side tracked by issues or additions in EAW. But CW2 1.05 will not probably be official before I have checked everything, so go ahead.

Thanks, that is fine. I'll probably focus on other things until it becomes relevant again, then.
