3 NM Victory Battle and Leaders gain no experience

I have asked this question before but not in this specific a manner. The screenshot shows the battle results of one of my current PBEM games. Longstreet was Corp commander(with stack), and PGT Beauregard was in region but not in stack when Longstreet's Corp was attacked. The Battle was a defensive victory worth 3 National Moral, PGT was injured in the battle, and placed in an adjacent region's town. When I looked at Longstreet's stack, he and the rest of the leaders involved in this battle did not gain any experience, not even 1/10 of a star. The units, brigades and regiments involved in the battle showed increases in experience in what I consider a normal fashion.

Does anyone know why they did not gain any experience? What are the requirements for leaders to gain experience?

I don't know but I have seen the same thing after a big victory.

Seems like you get experience more for attacking than defending, I have noticed that. It also seems that anytime I have lost a battle I do not gain experience, even if during the battle you cause a 2 to 1 loss ratio in your favor.
