repeated crashes

Sun Mar 30, 2014 8:38 pm

This is a first for me; i do not think i have ever posted in AGEOD tech support. This is not a good first.

I purchased ACW2, installed the 1.00 installer, updated with your websites 1.03 update.
Started game as Union against computer. Crashed when i tried to end the second turn. Error message said something about 'zip***.dll file not found". I searched on tech support and noticed that you say for single player turn off turn compression. I do.

Start a new game as Confederates against computer, turn compression off. Crashes trying to process second turn.

My computer is a bod standard windows 7 home premium, 8GB RAM, blah blah blah.

I had turned on logging of errors but when i checked C:\my games\civil war 2\logs, the folder was empty.

So, will attempt another turn. See what happens.

Okay, found that the game creates a C:\my games\Cw2\ directory that stays empty and a C:\michael\my documents\my games\cw2 directory.

So here is that main log. Tell me if you want anything else.

I'm sorry about your trouble. It seems you restarted the game at least once after your crash, as the log indicates nothing of a problem.

If you get a reproducible crash when trying to process second turn I would tend to say it comes from a lack of write access given either by Windows UAC or from an Anti-virus toward the application. What's the anti-virus you use? You might need to add in its white list the game in this case.
Is the error reproducible with this saved game? I can also check your saved game to be sure that's this kind of error.

okay, i started again, i turned down both memory usage and texture size 1 notch from the right(full). I was able to run 3 turns in a row with no crashes.

There is a fly in the ointment though, having the lower memory usage makes the map scroll at a snails pace and there is no reason for this. I have 8 GB of the fastest memory available and a minimum of background services running, i suspect you guys have a memory leak.

Given the engine is not using the latest DirectX version and that videos drivers support for old Dx9 is sometime lacking, it may happen that a very powerful and modern computer is paradoxically less stable than an older one for our games. At this point (it is rare though, the overwhelming majority of users don't have particular memory issue) I know it is frustrating when you are the one having the problem.

Be sure to not have activated file compression option and replay option in-game, they both use memory.
Also, you can try disabling texture initialization at start. Scrolling will have hiccups, but the game will generally use less memory, except if you want to move the map to areas like Mexico or Caribbean.
if you lower max texture size, some large sea regions will be replaced by a generic texture. This will use less memory and scrolling should not be slowed down, it won't be as pretty as before though.

As for max memory usage, a lower setting is generally more stable but regions caching is less efficient, that's why scrolling the map is lagging. You can try upping it while you lower max texture size.

If these work around (because they are only that) don't work and if the game is not stable enough, I don't have much to propose but proposing you a refund. I hope we won't get to that though.

Pocus, you don't get to take my game back! :)
I knew i should have kept my old computer; of course it is more stable.
Like i said, 1 notch down on both memory and textures is fine, but scrolling the map is kind of like when i was beta-ing
PON for you.

Personally i am blaming the other Philippe because everyone knows he's evil.

thanks,
Mike

All Philippes are evil, the difference is in the gradient of wickedness. PhilThib having been around much more longer than me on earth :cursing: , he is de facto and in essence more evil. :king:

Seriously, I hope that these work around will make the game bearable enough stability-wise that you can enjoy the actual gameplay.
