Who are your favorite Confederate generals not in the game?

Thu Jul 30, 2015 6:21 pm

Here is a short list of generals who commanded divisions or higher commands who are not in the game (I have a longer list, but these are the names that stick out):
Charles Clark, James Kemper, William Stark, John R. Jones, Mansfield Lovell, Francis Shoup, Martin Luther Smith, John Bowen, Reuben Walker, St. John R. Liddell, States Rights Gist, Armistead Long, James Fagan, Edward Walthall, William Jones, Hilary Jones, Matthew C. Butler, Thomas L. Rosser, Henry Clayton, James Chalmers, Bryan Grimes

Are you a fan of any of these or even one I’ve left out? Why? SR Gist is my favorite, because of his name alone, but I’m curious about others’ feelings.

I haven't played through all of patch 1.06 yet so I don't know if he's been recently added, but William Barksdale.

Barksdale never led a division, I think. But I think there is a good argument for Barksdale's brigade as an elite brigade with a sharpshooter unit on its defense of Fredericksberg alone. Their work there is one of the most impressive actions by an individual brigade in the war, if not the most impressive - at least based on Shelby Foote's wonderful description.

I believe Barksdale's forces are already represented with an elite brigade (Mississippi brigade in the vanilla game). If Barnard Bee (only commanded a brigade and who was only made brigadier posthumously) and several others who never even made general officer rank can make it in, I see no reason why Barksdale can't.

But I overlooked that your OP mentioned division command, so apologies.

No problem there, I didn't mean to require some sort of rule. I was more asking if he did lead a division. You must be right about the Mississippi brigade, that makes me happy that it is included.

Also, I don't mean this thread to be strictly about who is missing from the game, although that is certainly an implication. Rather, I'm curious about some of the lesser known or lesser appreciated characters in the war. Speaking of generals who never led a division, I'm very curious about brigade commander Albert Jenkins whose 1862 WV raid included a brief stop in Ohio, thus making him the leader of the first organized Confederate force to enter a northern state. I wonder if he hadn't died in May of 1864, if today he would be as famous as John Mosby? Either way, while the partisan war in Missouri exists in the game, I feel it is somewhat missing from West Virginia, and the Moccasin Rangers and the Snake Hunters are an interesting story to me.

Second William Barksdale. Was watching a documentary will ago about Gettysburg were he died leading his men and they described him as a ardent patriot and slaveholder of the South. Think it will make for a nice new ability in his case looking at his actions in the war. Something on the lines of strong moral ,ardent patriot with then bonus abilities to his men.

Because of his ardent patriotism he maybe should have a bigger chance of getting killed in action.

I agree WV needs that irregular war, there is Thomas Legion for Tennessee, WV deserves a similar unit and partisans.

A difficulty with irregulars in WV (and somewhat in Tennessee - especially Eastern Tennessee) that isn't so present in Missouri is the mountainous territory makes movement very slow even for cavalry units. I'm not sure if partisans perform better, but slow movement is difficult for an irregular unit which often is in pillaged territories (by design) and might get hungry even with the forage ability.

Sorry about the PM folder thing. I don't like to remove PMs because I've had various discussions about modding I'd like to keep on hand. I cleaned it out some, but it sure would be nice if the PM folders were bigger.
