PBEM protection - password?

Tue Jul 29, 2014 11:32 pm

Hi,

So, having recently started PBEM, I noticed that there seemed to be nothing preventing the host from tampering with the non-host's files. In a post over at Matrix Games forum, AGEOD said that it was very difficult to come up with a new system barring an external server. My question is, what about password protection? WITP and the old SSG wargames used this; the save files are password protected at start, so that if a player wants to open the other side's orders, he/she receives a password prompt, preventing any file tampering on their part.

Now, I know nothing about programming, but would this be so difficult to implement? It's fine for friendly PBEM, but I would feel really uneasy joining CWII tournaments and the like knowing that there is basically no PBEM protection for this game...

In tournaments the tournament director is usually the one executing the turns and generally not taking part in tournament play at all. Although he/she could conceivably open a players orders and change them it is something I would far from expect with this community.
