Search for the perfect ACW game

Wed Feb 05, 2014 4:48 am

I have had a decades long search for a game which perfectly emulates the American Civil War. I did find one board game which seemed to meet this quest. Until now, not a single computer game has lived up to this dream. Now I have found one. ACW II is such an excellent simulation without constraining alternate history options.
I am in my sixth pbem play of this game, each actually feels right. Nice game.

CW2 is an improvement. AACW was quite good - CW2 was a good build decision by the publishers. From what I've seen, I think Athena got buffed a bit; could be entirely wrong, but the AI seems a bit crisper.

(A) When in doubt, agree with Ace.
(B) Pull my reins up sharply when needed, for I am a spirited thoroughbred and forget to turn at the post sometimes.

I also like that the new version has such a mix of scales too. Sure you have your big slugfests in the East, but small unit tactics in the less settled areas matter too.

The immersion-level is amazing, and really addictive. I am very glad there is not an hours-played counter like on Steam. My wife would kill me if she saw the actual number :)
