Who moved the goalposts?

Wed Nov 13, 2013 4:12 am

I'm in Sept '62 as the Union against the AI. I'm at 139 NM and automatic victory is 150. I process my turn and hit F9 to discover automatic victory has now jumped to 185 NM. Say what? Is this WAD? Will automatic victory conditions move upwards again if I approach 185 NM and it's not anywhere near 1865?

Kinda like the way the rail and river transport requirements keep going up. Those I can understand, as each players force pool continues to grow.

There's a problem, though: even if I capture all remaining objectives listed by pressing F9, I will be 2 pts shy of the NM required for a "glorious victory". This shouldn't be. It should be possible within the scenario parameters to always achieve a major victory. I'm playing the West campaign, so maybe that is why. The scenario was not completely tweaked to allow a major victory. Athena keeps raising the bar, but I'm not playing a full campaign, so I lack the objectives to capture to meet the conditions.

I'm also scoring VPs for an objective which lies in region neither player can enter. This shouldn't be, either. The region in question does not even contain a structure, so how would ownership be determined?

This is most probably a one time event, it won't move away further.

Pocus, what about NM pts? I can capture every remaining objective listed but not reach the total required for complete victory?

I'll check with the designers for the event and what can be done on that. For the rest, you can only gain NM by beating the enemy in battles.

We would need to know the exact date of when this happened, and most likely the event that occured, creating the change in the victory levels...most likely something linked to the Emancipation Proclaimation or the Lincoln Reelection...in all cases WAD and most likely once shot. In other words, it represent the fact that at some point in the war, it becomes much harder to win or lose...

I forgot about battle wins raising NM; still learning. :)

@ PhilThib: I'm playing the West scenario, not full scenario. To my knowledge no event fired raising NM. I just noticed the change the following turn after checking the objectives page. Timeframe was Sept '62.

I checked and confirm, it was the "Emancipation Proclaimation" event, even in this West 1862 campaign... you probably missed the info, but it did occur, and that is the one changing the victory level. The only thing I feel that should be changed is the start date (slightly) and the conditions of the occurence (now, only if USA NM is higher than 80...may be some randomness should be added)

You are absolutely right. I do remember the Emancipation Proclamation. I am sorry to waste your time chasing down something which is not a problem but a result of my unfamiliarity with the game. AGEOD has many titles for you to support, and I am sure you have multiple projects in the works; I know you are busy man. My only suggestion for future titles would be to include a few additional words in the event text which indicate, especially to new players, that victory conditions in the game have changed as a result of the event. (I do not remember reading anything to this effect in the Emancipation Proclamation text but I could be wrong.) I say future titles because I do not expect or suggest that AGEOD should spend man hours rewriting dozens or hundreds of events which may affect the game in this way; just something to think about in the future for us noobs. Thanks for checking and thanks for the great support.
