Grant's non Promotion

Thu Oct 31, 2013 10:54 am

Here is the file when I got the message for Grants Promotion. The message is still there but the promotion box is greyed out as I have already selected it. The second set of files is 2 turns later and still no promotion. I do have the file that is one turn after the promotion but its on my work PC and I won't be back at work till next week.

Make sure no locked units are in same stack, might try putting Grant by himself and then he might be promotable.

Yes, that's the problem here. Remove the 2 locked units as all the stack is now considered locked.

So that is undocumented and players are supposed to figure that out? But anyhow we have progressed past this point in the game now so will he get another chance for promotion?

Not documented, true. For future references, while unit/stack is locked most special orders are disabled.

While it would seem logical that a locked stack would not have the same abilities as a unlocked stack the same can't be said for a stack of a dozen or so units that happens to have one lone locked unit in it. So this really should be a footnote in the manual. However the problem is the 'promotion' button was active and I pushed it. *IF* the button were non active I would have realized something was wrong and probably figured it out that the locked unit was preventing the process.

I really like this game but I am surprised by these kind of things when we consider how long this engine has been around. The manual really needs to specify these numerous nuances or the designers rub them out.

Can anyone tell me if Grant will be offered another opportunity for promotion or is he destined to remain a ** for the rest of the game?

He had another win and he has the promotion option again :)

See if it works this time.

Good luck! He was promotable for me pretty quickly and he's chewing up people right now.

Happy to report Grant is ***

He celebrated with a sudden defeat when attacked by 20,000 Rebels.

The engine is very complex and there are still a fair amount of quirks like that, we try to clean them when possible and when time allows though

I hope by the time you publish your Grand Strategy Napoleonic masterpiece it's all fixed :)

I had another problem promoting Jackson. Same deal, I pushed promote button and next turn nothing. He is not stacked with any fixed units. He is however combined with a brigade. Would that stop it?

To be honest this whole promotion thing being stopped by this kind of thing is very silly. Please fix it. It spoils the fun factor.

I read in another thread, either on this forum or the Matrix forum, that to promote a general he must be in a stack by himself. I believe the workflow is: create a separate stack where the general is the only unit, push the promote button, then place the general back into a stack of your choosing. He should promote during the next resolution phase.

Just confirmed this on the AACW wiki; see FAQs, tip #6; don't think promotion mechanism has changed from AACW to CWII.

Well it sure needs to.

It has, if you select a general within a stack and then click on promote, this will only promote him. This is trickier if you want to promote only a general and 2 can be in a stack though. That's the limit of the current system.
