2*Generals

Thu Mar 19, 2015 1:03 am

I am playing as the CSA it's June 1863 and so far I have only six 2* Generals. Can you promote Generals yourself? If not how to you get more? As I have four armies in the field I would like more corps commanders.

Yes, you can promote leaders yourself. In order for them to eligible they need to increase their seniority by 4 or more points through combat. Getting them to a total seniority of 1 or 2 also works.

Not all commanders are eligible to be promoted. You can tell if they are by going to the unit statistics tab and see if there is an entry in 'Upgrades to'. It is in the right most tab if I remember right.

My suggestion is to be sure to check the ledger each turn, but especially turns where you win a battle.
Use the command menu, middle one, and select the leaders eligible, then select promote.

This.
Its the magnifying glass looking icon in the bottom right, scroll to the bottom of the list to find any changes to your generals seniority. If eligible for promotion, it will say so. Click on the ledger entry to get taken to that general and promote him. Sometimes you have to take him out of the stack to be able to promote him, which can be a pain if he's in charge of an important division in an important army. If you think you might get some generals promoted (like in a summer advance in the east), put some random generals in there so they can take over your divisions when your guys get promoted.

Also- do you really need all of your 3 star generals in command of an army? When I'm playing as the Union, by the time I get Hancock and McPherson to 3 stars, I don't have any more commands to give them, so they stay corps commanders. And as the South, promoting Longstreet hurts his values, so I keep him at 2 stars in command of a corps. If you have one of your 4 three star generals in charge of an "army" in El Paso watching California, that's a poor use. Bring him back to Virginia to operate a corps.

See that thing in the bottom right, behind the "Matrix Games" logo?
The attachment 20130730075945.jpg is no longer available

there are six little boxes. The one all the way on the right looks like a magnifying glass.
Click on that.
There will be a bunch of messages.
Usually, the first ones are about playing those RGD cards, like "CSA is building a trail in West Bumfuck, TX" - scroll down - usually the last few messages are about increases to generals seniority after battles, like "General Jackson's seniority is now 2".
If your generals seniority increases enough to be eligible for promotion, it will say something like "General Jackson is eligible for promotion"
Click on the message, which will transport you on the map to the general eligible for promotion.
promote general
