Sailors role?

Thu Feb 26, 2015 8:05 pm

Sorry, just bought the game and was wondering what exactly is the role of both sailors and marines. I tried to search through the forum for the sailors' role in the game, but didn't find anything much.

In the manual, the only thing I could find about using sailors is: "Create a naval landing force of sailors in a land region (even if hostile) adjacent to x riverine combat ships."

When I select to build a sailor, the regions around rivers and oceans light up green even without any of my naval or riverine close by.

What specifically are sailors used for in the game?

Thanks.

Have you checked the popup tooltips when you hover your mouse over the sailor and marine special rules in game? Your answer is there.

Ouch! I should have checked that first.

Both sailors and marines suffer no penalty during naval landings and only a 50% penalty for river opposed crossings.

My apologies for not checking that before posting and many thanks for your reply.

No problem! The tooltips are mint so I wanted you to see for yourself rather than just stating what they do!

Sailors are cheaper to build and IMHO better for throwing into your river crossing corps!

I will definitely take that advice into consideration as I didn't think sailors were worth the build cost, but now I know better.

Thanks!

Does the sailor/marine bonus apply to the whole stack - or only that unit?

Have you checked the Amphibious tooltip? The ability applies to all elements of the unit that this element is in. Ergo not the whole stack.

Unless they are in a division, but only if the tool-tip says that it affects the entire "unit", the same as an element with 'Strong Morale' affects all other elements of a division which contains that elite element.

Thanks for the feedback! I was wondering if the bonus was applied to the entire division the sailor is in and it looks like it does.

It would be nice if the tool tip would appear in the purchasing screen. I realize if I go find a Marine or Sailor unit already in the game it'll give me the info, I think it'd just be a nice addition to have the tool tip in the purchasing area.

Does the ability icon on the unit in the purchase panel not have a tool-tip?

If not, while the unit is selected all of its elements are listed in the unit detail panel on the right. Click on the NATO symbol of the element in question to open that element in the element detail window. There I know that the ability icons have the tool-tip.
