Playing as the south, what if i refuse to fire the first shots at ft sumpter? Is there any great advantage in forcing the north to shoot first or would I fail to set events in motion and have a long and boring game where nothing happens ?

You end up with a thorn in your back and make it easier for the North to take Charleston.
Don't worry, even if you take the fort the North will be back to try to take it back from you
and take Charleston. Athena (nickname for the AI) is pretty determined to take it eventually.
