Download and install 7zip, then you can take the installer out of the .rar archive (a rar is an alternative for zip).

Then just run the installer.

I'm not great at file manipulation. I downloaded 7Zip but see no way to execute it. I moved the .rar file into the same directory as 7Zip but don't know where to go next?

When you have installed 7zip right clicking on the rar file should present the option: open with... -> 7-zip.

Alternatively, double clicking the rar should unpack it, or present you with options.

7Zip is a file archive manager. You can use it to archive files by creating an archive of the files inside a single compressed file. I don't know if you can use it to create archives in RAR format, but you can use it to extract files from a RAR archive.

If you've downloaded 7Zip, you will have to install it as it is an installable program. Do that first.

Now <Right><Click> on the Windows Start button to open its context menu and select 'Open Windows Explorer'.

In the left-hand section of the Explorer window you will see icon grouped together with the heading icon standing out to the left a little bit. Those should read something like:

Favorites

Libraries

Homegroup

Computer

Network

but YMMV.

Under Libraries you should find Documents; double-click on this to enter it.

Check if you have a folder named 'tmp'. If not jump down to B. in the indented section.

If it is not empty. If not jump down to A. in the indented section.

If you have 'tmp' and it is empty, skip over the directly following indented section down to C.
A. If it's not empty, back out of 'tmp'.

B.<Right><Click> to the right of the folders and in the context menu select New->Folder.

A new folder has now been created with the name 'New Folder' and the name is selected so that you can change it. Type in tmp, tmp1, tmp2 or what ever unused name you wish and press <Enter>.

You now have a new folder into which you can unpack the patch archive.

Double click on it to enter it in the Windows Explorer.
C. You are now ready to unpack the patch archive.

After you have installed 7-Zip you can start it through your Start menu. Click on the Windows Start button => All Programs => 7-Zip => 7-Zip File Manage to start the program.

7-Zip look pretty similar to the Windows Explorer and you can navigate your file system in the same way.

Navigate to the folder into which you downloaded the patch archive.

Double click on the archive to open it in 7-Zip. You should see a single file named 'Patch_CW2_v1.05rc2.exe'.

Now click and hold the file to drag it to the Windows Explorer window in which you have 'tmp' or what ever folder you are using opened, and release the mouse-button to drop the file there. 7-Zip will unarchive the file into that folder so that you can access it with Windows Explorer now.

Now double click on 'Patch_CW2_v1.05rc2.exe' to execute it.

When it asks you to where you want to install the patch, you man have to navigate to the correct folder, depending on to where you installed the game. You MUST select the installation directory, not the CW2 directory. The installation directory is always 1 level above CW2 in the folder hierarchy.

Hope this helps.
