Chevrons\Ribbons Missing

Mon Sep 22, 2014 11:32 am

Hi,

Just purchased Civil War 2, so Apologies for my first post being about a problem, I'll try and just make them cries for help in the future :)

On the left hand side of the unit cards in screenshots and videos I see chevrons/ribbons, I can also see them in TOAW, but in my Civil War 2 game they are not there. I was wondering if perhaps they had been removed or I've missed a setting or something else I'm not thinking of.

Thanks.

Welcome!

If I understand you correctly, the "V" shaped symbols on the left side of a unit icon merely indicate that more than one element is in that unit. A single regiment unit has no symbol, a brigade has a few and a Division may have many.

Yes Grey Fox, those are the very things, gives you an idea of number of elements and they're experience. They are not showing up on any unit card, I've loaded up later scenarios to check it's not just because I'm at the start of the Grand Campaign. Very strange, I'll load up TEAW and check them there again.

EDIT - All good in TEAW, but in CW2 they are definitely missing.

Tried a re-install, and still no chevrons. I hadn't adjusted any settings, so really, I don't know what's going on.

Perhaps I should have put this in the support forum. Could a Mod kindly move it across please.

Update : I copied chevron files over from TEAW (backed up CW2 files) and now they show up in my CW2 game, so all is well again. :)

The only other difference I noticed between the two games while doing this was that the tooltip for the unit card shows when you hover over anywhere on the card, but in CW2 I have to hover my cursor over the unit image to get the tooltip, it doesn't show when cursor is over the background of the card. I don't know if this is a problem not, or it was just a change by the developers.

Chevrons:
Chevrons disappeared in one of the patches for some reason.

Tooltip trigger area:
I think they realized that having the whole card activate the tooltip was a better design, so implemented it in TEAW. While playing CW2 I have often wished that the tooltip area was the whole card and not just the troop image.

Disappeared after a patch eh!. That's a relief, I can relax about it now, good to know about the tooltip activation too, and that I'm not going crazy afterall. :)

As for my fix above, on reloading the game, the chevrons were there, but only one per unit, regardless of elements, so I removed the TEAW files - but now still have a single chevron for each unit.

It looks like I'm not the only one who looked at my TEAW install to try to figure out how to fix the chevrons in CWII. Anyway, here's what you do:

1) Go to Civil War II/CW2/Graphics/FrontEnd/GUIStackPanel/Chevrons&Stars. Make a copy of ChevronBlack1.png and name it ChevronBlack0.png. Do the same for ChevronWhite1.png. You can also copy these files over from a TEAW install, doesn't matter.

2) Edit the file Civil War II/CW2/Settings/UserInterface.opt. It's just a text file, notepad is fine for this. About 2/3rds of the way through the file, there is a line that says: "inoChevronRatio = 1; // x SUs needed per chevron on unit card (if 2, then 2 SUs needed, etc.)". Change the 1; to a 2. Make sure there's no semicolon, that's what's what's messing this line up. (You can set this to one element per chevron, but the game will only display up to ten chevrons, so setting it to 1 is only useful in TEAW, where units have a maximum of nine elements)

If the game displays one chevron per unit regardless of elements, Alemanxl, it sounds like you've done step 1 but not step 2 (it didn't revert when you copied your backed-up CW2 files back because that didn't erase the extra .png files). Just do step 2 and you should be set.

Much appreciated enzien, the edit in the settings file did the trick. :)

Now I can concentrate fully on the massacre of my disorganised forces instead of looking through files.

Yup, that brings them to the light of day again Image, which leaves 1 issue still. Having a column of 9 chevrons along the left side will overlap the top ability icon on division which have 4 ability icons "below" the chevrons. Personally I also don't particularly like having only 1 chevron for every 2 elements.

I tried adding graphics for up to 20 chevrons by adding a second column starting with the 11th chevron and modifying "..\CW2\FrontEnd\GUIStackPanel.dfm" and "GUIStackPanel.pas", but apparently I didn't do it correctly, because I didn't get a second column to display.

After some thought I think the only viable solution would be to have 3 columns of 6 chevrons. There should be enough room between the left edge of the counters and the division commander's portrait, I think without crowding the portrait too much, but I've yet to actually make a mockup of that to actually see it.

I'd like to hear what you guys think would be the better solution:

1. As currentyl (fixed), 1 column of 9 chevrons (1 per 2 elements), which will overlap with ability icons on some divisions.

2. 2 columns of 9 chevrons (1 per element), which will overlap with ability icons on some divisions.

3. 2 columns of 6 chevrons (1 chevron per element), which will NOT overlap with ability icons on any division, but may crowd the leader's portrait.

4. A different solution not mentioned here. Feel free to make suggestions.

5. Maybe I should make this into a pole :) .

You could have a silver chevron at the top represent 5 individual elements. Thus 2 silver and 4 normal chevrons (14) would still fit within the limit of 6 icons. All other combos would be less than 6 icons.

That would require code changes. Let's stick to things that can be modded.

I still can't get more than 10 chevrons to show up, but this is what those 10 look like
