Mortar Boats

Sun Sep 21, 2014 12:25 am

I take it these are meant to provide a kind of shore bombardment. Should I be building them as the CSA? I can imagine them being of some use in the western theatre.

If i build some down by Fort Pickens, will they easy the taking of said fort? Are they better or worse than land borne siege artillery? Do they fire if a land battle occurs adjacent to them?

The Mortar Boats only provide a +1 Siege bonus to a Siege you are laying in an adjacent land region. Since such abilities are not cumulative you will never need more than 1 in a siege and if you actually have a Siege Artillery already, it will add nothing addition to the siege.

They don't actually do anything in normal combat--offensive and defensive values are 0--and they won't provide any help if you are being besieged.

They do help to block enemy harbors, though.
...I think.

Now that you mention it, if they are considered naval combat vessels, then they probably block supply and help block river crossings too; although I'd hardly buy them for those purposes.

And what if the force besieging a structure is led by a Siege Expert or Engineer commender? Does a mortar boat stack its bonus?

I'm fairly certain that none of the bonuses stack.

I'm very certain that having multiple units with the same ability will not add-up their bonuses. However I don't think that Engineer, Siege Expert and Siege Artillery are the same abilities. I'll have to check into those.

Real-Siege-Artillery™ units and Mortarboats do share the same ability. So the +1 bonus to the Siege_Role is still only +1, but the Real-Siege-Artillery™ units will add their offensive firepower to the artillery comparison, where by the Mortarboats, even if they would add their offensive firepower--but I don't think they do, because they are in a different region--have an offensive firepower of "0" *WHAAA-Whaaa-whaaaaa*
