Union Strategy and Building Tips for ACW2?

Sat Jun 14, 2014 12:53 am

I am wondering if anyone has put together a ACW2 strategy guide for new Union players for the 1861-1865 campaign? While learning by doing is fun, some of the pluses and minuses of various approaches are not obvious, especially the regional decision cards. I realize there are probably many different play styles and no one "perfect" approach. I also realize people like to keep their winning secrets from potential opponents. :)

But maybe one of the esteemed and successful veteran players can lay out the basics of what is important and what is secondary in terms of strategy and builds.

Not being one of the esteemed and successful veteran players, I can respond with a degree of confidence to set the stage.

I think players need to decide if they are playing an economic game, a military game or a grand campaign with a controlled economy.

The Union must win some early battles to gain better leaders. It must also produce, that is outproduce the South, units.

That said, your comment about leaning by doing is correct. All Ageod games are complex and beyond a simple to do list. The Union for the most part has enough resources to build without cards

In general, build every super unit (inf, cav and art in one unit), plus ships. Raise the level of major cities, telegraph and other cards do this, and win easy battles to gain leader promotions. Gain the gateways of the West, that is the Mississippi and Tennessee, hold Lee in Virginia until you an take the Shenandoah Valley.

Thanks. What game option settings are most appropriate for PBEM in terms of fairness to both sides?

I use the default settings, except I turn on the replay option as I use this when things look fishy.
Default is liked by most.
Oh wait, I use "Veteran Option" on activation. This is truly fun, you do not know if your leaders are active when you issue orders.

I'm certainly not a veteran player, but Mickey3D and I are doing an AAR on our game. This is a link to my Union moves so far:
