Nato Symbols in Strategic Atlas-noob question

I have a noob question about the Nato symbols in the atlas. I started full two front campaign (the earlier one) and I am just looking at what units I have to start with in the atlas and I am confused. Why do some units like the 1st Inf regiment in NY have what looks like a symbol for a division? (a flag with two X on the top). The 11th Inf. Regiment in IA with General Sumner has the same number of soldiers but only one X. Are these actually nato symbols or more of a indicator of size or strength compared to other units? and did I miss something in the manual?

I believe they represent elements of that particular unit. Click on a brigade and there will be multiple NATO symbols, signifying multiple elements.

Well...I clicked on the flag in the atlas and it sends you to the unit area and brings up the unit card. They all seem to be single regiments with 750 men....but I did notice that their strength seems to go along with the either the Xs or the Is or the dots above the flag.

The CSA force that starts in Charleston (roughly a division) has the NATO symbol for an Army Group! Strange...

Depends also of the leader there, whatever the number of men.

In other words, they really aren't NATO symbols or representative of anything quantitative. Why not just get rid of them in the next patch?

Seriously, though, Calvin809, these symbols don't mean anything. Just ignore them and look at your formations on the map. The game still has a few patches to go...
