turn resolution now at very slow crawl

Tue Mar 12, 2013 5:31 pm

playing the US my game has slowed to a crawl for turn resolution starting around Late June 1896. Started a turn last night and went to bed. Restarted the game this AM around 0800 zulu and I have been waiting on Early July 1896 for ever since. Game is stalling at processing of Day 15/15.

You probably have an error in a script or something. You will need to check the logs (Main log and script report). You are looking for critical errors in the main log, and for just errors in the script report.

0 errors in the script report it tells me.

If the main log says error when it errs, then there are no errors in that file either.

If there are other search terms like dodgy bit, uh oh, whoops, yikes, etc., I could search for that.

Did the main log have something saying critical?

And was the script report the last one (from the turn that didn't process), or from the last turn to process? You will have to look at the time stamp of the file.

Nothing critical in the main log.

The times stamp on the script report is roughly five minutes older than the .ord file. I'm guessing that's the orders file. There are also pre and post parse reports with the same time stamp.

More background, I had launched an early war with Spain over a forged casus-belli and decided to call it quits because the Cleveland administration couldn't keep national morale up for the necessary period of time to acquire points to secure Puerto RIco, the Philippines, etc.

So I got a little spring training, an opportunity to see what I might need to take them out for sure the next time, plus some increases in naval tech between now and then if I need to blockade Spain.

Thank you for your help Jim.

The script report is 5 min after your last .ord file? Then it sounds like it processed normally, then stalls after the script, but before you get control back.

If it is still doing that-stalling (I assume it is), you can try going back 1 turn and seeing if you can process normally from there (it would be early June), and see if the problem persists for early July be re-running late June and early July.

I have already tried re-starting from early June. I didn't report the issue till it happened to me twice.

I am out of ideas at this point then. You could post your game (zipped) for someone to review, see if we see the same issues.

The problem seems to be the peace offer. If I go back and cancel it, everything works fine. I suppose I shall have to continue with my plan to take the Balearics as a coaling station for the Spanish blockade. It has been a lovely little war so far. I wish the folks at home could enjoy it more.

I tried to upload that turn but the zip file is just a tad too big.

BTW, the turn hangs on the spinning gears at day 15 and never makes it to the furnace.

Now that you mention a peace offer, I seem to remember there being something on the forums about a potential problem with peace between the US and Spain (at the end of the Spanish-American War). I don't remember the issue or the solution. This may or may not be that issue. You can send less or split up the upload if it is too big (just the .hst and .trn file together only, or send the .hst and then send the .trn).

This is a similar hang from later in the game.

I cancelled the previous treaty and played through till I had enough points for El Rif. The peace treaty went through maybe two turns ago.

I did recheck the log and script reports. No errors critical or otherwise.

I see you have 2 downloads of July 1897. It appears that both are the same. Is this the turn when the freeze happens? I see nothing with Spain (no war or anything). Let me know if this is the turn before, or turn after, or 2 turns before or what.

PS - I ran the turn. It's not in the scripts (they finish running), but it appears that after the scripts are completed something happens to the program, and it goes into some sort of loop. The game has locked up, and my windows task manager shows that my computer is running flat out trying to process something in PON (it's using the max computer power it can).

Too many options on the file upload widget.

What I posted is the turn that does hang once executed.

The War with Spain ended two turns ago when he ceded El Rif.

This version of the problem is roughly a year later than the previous example. Once I got around the first hang by going back and cancelling the peace treaty I sort of lost track of which file was which. And I was sort of curious if the hang would turn up again.

So, with this example, I can't really think of any particular choice I made that is coincidental to the appearance of the issue.

I gave no orders (and there were none with your file), so it was not an action on your part. It processed all the scripts, and then was attempting to do something (as I said, it maxed my machine out after it produced the script report). So it is something else. Unfortunately, I don't know of a solution for you (perhaps someone else does). My only advice would be to move your save game somewhere else, and remove then re-install the program (this should take care of any errors in the game), and place your save game back in the new PON re-install. This may or may not correct the problem.

Thanks Jim. What you found is interesting. And maybe someone from Ageod will take a look at some point.

I guess I'll think about your suggestion. But it's a new install from December with the latest patch and not many other changes on the computer in terms of Microsoft stuff.

Does the program create temporary files anywhere?

I believe it does, but that the temporary files are sent to the recycling bin (this may be part of the problem - I am not sure). I have seen temporary files after you process the turn, but before you get control back. The temporary files are for the .trn for the various nations. The game creates temporary files that are converted/supplemented by the permanent .trn files.

Thank you Jim.

I have set that directory aside pending future developments

Until then I'll just replay the US with a more careful eye on upgrades requiring coal, chemicals, etc.

ugh. This problem is back with no hostile moves towards Spain this time around.

I suppose I have gotten my money's worth out of this game given the hours played/price paid ratio. . . And it does look like I am on a winning trajectory . . . So I can always say I would have beaten the AI.

But it would be nice to play it till the end.

Would I recommend this game or this company?

Eh. Choices are limited in this time period.
