No sound

Thu Sep 13, 2012 10:50 am

Install looks OK, but no sound. Setup tried to install in default "C" drive, but my system has OS (XP service pack3) on "G", so setup was directed to install on OS drive. Sounds check out OK on dxdiag. Sound and ambience files can be played outside of game. !Profiler0.txt reports "Aliases\age_Alias.ini this is deemed misleading, please change??", the Musics & Sounds configuration files all point to mp3 files that play independent of game, !Main log.txt shows audio intialized, 185 sounds and 10 musics loaded, but game is absolutely silent ??
------ Oops, partly my fault. My sound card is an EMU1212. If I set the sync source to internal AND start a stand-alone mp3 player before I start the game, play any of the mp3 files, and leave the application in the background, then start the game - I get sound. There's an annoying click to the ambience files (seems like a 2 second interval). This seems to be a common thread running through Paradox games. None of my others games exhibit this behavior.

Is the click only presents when the sound is played in game, or the sound file is faulty for you? Some can perhaps remastered slightly.

sound file is good, just some conflict going on in the game
the sounds are too short for this to show up (at least in the tutorial), experience it only in the ambiance files
It may not be present in all ambiance files, will have to look and listen to that more carefully.

remastering at a lower bitrate and replacing file produces same clicks. replacing AJE_Main_Theme.mp3 with renamed romegoestowar.mp3 from VaeVictis plays just fine, then when random rotate into unmodified AJE music clicks resurface. When randomly rotating from original AJE file into renamed VV file clicks disappear ?

Some static that would happen when 2 musics not encoded the same way are played? I admit I'm quite clueless here, our sound/music library is quite stable (we use it since what, 5 years?).

Sorry if this is off topic but as i was feeling out the game before release i heard "taps" in the music every few seconds. Then i listened main theme and other tracks with winamp and hear same "taps" also. if this is the same thing mstrg is talking about then perhaps the problem is in the audio files themselves ?

I'm running an EMU 1212M soundcard on an Asus P6TDV motherboard under XP Pro. The onboard sound is disabled in BIOS of course. This is a step up over the consumer cards. What I hear sounds like a pop in an old vinyl record (oops, showed my age). I'm thinking the problem surfaces on some combination of hardware. If we can find a pattern it will point to a solution.
