AI performance

Wed Aug 21, 2013 2:16 am

I have played the old ACW and BOA and now AJE and the ROP Gold. In my opinion, the AJE AI is very good. It is vastly improved over the old ACW, BOA and, in my limited experience so far, with ROP Gold. With the old ACW, BOA, I felt you could only get a really quality game playing PBEM. I am not sure yet about ROP Gold but I suspect PBEM is going to be necessary for a really good game. AJE has shown me that I can have a very enjoyeable game against the AI. I am assuming the AJE AI is so superior because AJE is a newer game with the latest version of the AI.

So I am wondering what other AGEOD games have an AI perfomrance at a similiar level of AJE? Perhaps, RUS, others?

I think the AJE AI is by far the best so far (though that in PoN is pretty good). My suspicion is it benefits from relatively limited force pools and, in many scenarios, clear objectives and few provinces.

In RoP, if you want a real SP challenge, play the Austrian side with the harshest activation rule (ie no movement if inactive), that really produces a stop-start feel to the war and makes you very reliant on armies led by your few competent commanders. Similar with the Prussian side but less noticeable (as you have better leaders) but inevitably at a crucial point you are going to have an army inert. The other good thing about this approach is it makes you very cautious about winter and its quite a decision whether to risk an army being inert for a couple of terms after snow arrives, but then, of course, that gamble may have allowed you to threaten a key city.

I reckon the AI in WiA is good, but I think it has problems in RuS. Too much going on, too much emphasis on efficient stack building etc, so it is easier to block (but still very good for learning the system etc)
AJE The Hero, The Traitor and The Barbarian
PoN Manufacturing Italy; A clear bright sun
RoP The Mightiest Empires Fall
WIA Burning down the Houses; Wars in America; The Tea Wars

I can't beat the AI on easy levels so please don't make it any harder without giving an easier level for noobs and nincompoops.

Taillebois,
I love your comment. AI did not work for me, so I played both sides instead of using AI in my other games. In PoN I play all eight sides.
If I play all eight, I win one of eight times or maybe I win every time. I am engaged in The Scramble for Africa Grand Campaign as all eight and winning. Kidding, but nicer than AI.
