Sortie Bug?

Sat Dec 22, 2012 10:53 pm

In the Caesar vs. Pompey scenario, one of Pompey's armies is inside of Syracusae and is being besieged by a smaller opposing force. In the current turn, the leader was active and tried to sortie outside of the city into the surrounding countryside and attack the besieging force. The army inside was put into attack posture and the sortie button was engaged. When the turn was executed, nothing happened. The force did not move. I've tried several different ways of getting the army to move out of the city without success. The only time I can get the army to move is to have it move to an adjacent province. I did notice the following odd collection of icons next to the picture of the army. Notice the icons for entering a structure and leaving a structure appearing simultaneously next to the picture of the leader. Is this indicating a bug that prevents the army from leaving the city into the countryside of the same province?

The sortie button is to have the unit move out to attack when an allied force moves in. You want to drag and drop your stack outside the city to have them attempt to engage the besiegers (note that it won't always be sucessful).

I tried the drag and drop about four or five times without success. I will try a few more times. I've had much more success in other AGEOD games, but not in this situation. Note that the army trying to come out of the city is about 3 times the size of the army outside. There may be large losses, but I would have thought they army inside would at least be able to come out.

What's also a bit odd is that if I drag and drop the army into an adjacent province, it appears to always come out (at least it did the two times I tried that). Why would it only sometimes come out occasionally if I were to drag and drop it in the same province?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Went back and tried variations of just dragging and dropping into the local province and into adjacent provinces. I was unable to get the army to leave the city if the drag and drop was into the local province. I was always able to get the army to leave the city if the drag and drop were into an adjacent province. Is this the way it is supposed to work?

As you say, the easiest way to get them out is to have them move to another province (then cancel the move by hitting the delete key). The issue is probably related to the size of the city vs. the size of the province with the enemy stack (you have to click in a part of the province that the game doesn't consider the city).

Jim-NC,

Thanks for the excellent suggestions. So far none of them has worked. Your latest suggestion, to drag the army to and adjacent province and then hit the delete key resulted in the army not leaving the city. I'm attaching the files for the current turn if anyone would like to have a go at trying to move the army inside Syracusae into the surrounding countryside (without leaving the province).
