Starting Consular army scale

Mon Aug 17, 2015 8:03 am

In TOR, the scale of armies are quite large. I have had battles of 50-60 thousand men against 40-50 thousand. I earlier asked about the size of the starting Consular armies and questioned the research team, but it seems they were ahead of my question. The standard Roman army was 2 Roman Legions and 2 Allied legions. But the battle of Trebia made it sound like it was perhaps double this.

Edit...It appears that the research team was quite clever and did their homework. 4 legions(2 Roman and 2 allied) is actually proper, however there is confusion about Trebia. Scipio was not there, and it was assumed his army winter quartered with him. How then could Longus have an army of almost 40 thousand? Did Scipio stay ill in Placentia but allow longus the use of his 4 legions? Or did Longus have a double sized army of 4 Roman and 4 allied legions? The entire description of the battle of Trebia has contradictions on placement of forces regarding what side of the river they were on. It is also debated if Scipio's army was there at all. Most assumed it was not. But then how did longus have such a large army?

I guess the research team had their opinion on this. So I will assume the starting Roman army sizes are correct, and Longus simply lead their combined forces at Trebia absent Scipio.

Hi

I am not the "historian" of the team (that is ElNino) But everything I have read tells me that, as depicted in BOR/HAN, each consular army had usually 2 legions and 2 alae.

You are correct and I corrected my question. It was based on I suppose, both my confusion and history's confusion about why Longus had an army the size he did at Trebia. But you are correct. The STANDARD Roman army was 2 Roman and 2 allied legions. I was amazed they even got the ratio of horse from Roman to Allies correct. Trebia however has always confused me.
