Why do Funditores and Sagitarii sometimes slow my moves by 300%

Sat Dec 01, 2012 2:24 am

I've encountered this several times in the Marius-Sulla-Pontus game, where having slingers or archers in a stack really slows it down. Not on every move, but definetly on some.

I have a force in Hispania using 10 out of 12 command points, a mix of legion, auxilia, equites and impedimenta. Time of year is December, trying to move from Toletum > Ilipa. With Funditores and/or archers in the stack move time is projected to be 45 days. Without them, 15 days. I look at the element stats and they have move coeffiecents of .95 and 1.10, which does not to explain the extreme slowdown. Cohesion is at or near 100% good for all units.

Is it trying to move african troops in the winter? I have african equites who do not seem to feel the effect of the cold.

Using the newest (1.01) version of AJE, game files attached.

thanks

There was an issue with units being out of their "region" which gives them a penalty to move. This could be your problem.

Thanks for the quick response. Is this behavior intentional or a bug? If intentional, is there any marker or special ability that indicates which units are affected?

It's intentional. I can't remember if there is a marker at the moment. IIRC, this effects certain African Units, and certain Germanic units and may effect other units as well. This was brought up by someone in the 4 Emperors scenario I believe about Germanic units taking forever to move. And I believe I remember someone talking about it with the Africans.

Some units (Germanic cav, eg) have area penalties when out of their "home" areas. This is defined and moddable, in the file Gamelogic.opt (in the settings subfolder of the AJE folder):

// ************************************************** *******
// ************ HOME AREA PENALTY/BONUS ****************
// ************************************************** *******
// see HomeArea at the model level

areaOutsideHomeAbi = -1 // -1 level to abies (can render them inactive)
areaOutsideHomeStr = -2 // Strategic
areaOutsideHomeOff = -2 // Offensive
areaOutsideHomeDef = -1 // Defensive
areaOutsideHomeTQ = -3 // TQ (and 5 time that to max cohesion)
areaOutsideHomeMR = 33 // Move Ratio Coeff (x0.33)
cohLocalAreaBonus = 10 // bonus to max cohesion if at home

As you see, this move penaltie decrease to 1/3 the move ratio if the unit is outside her home area.
Unfortunately the player does not have (yet) a good feedback of these penalties

If you want to change this, just open this file in notepad, put the number you wish (e.g., 100 means no move penaltie - that's how I usually play...), save and play on.

Regards
