In game pop info for each ability often states: "this ability apply if the leader is in command of the stack". So you tend to play with seniority in order to match the right general in for the right stack in the right situation.
But what i see in game is that those abilities are active in combat even if the general that got it is not the leader of the stack (or army, as sometimes is stated in game). Indeed in the battle report, i see the abilities icon belonging to not stack commander, even if those abilities are valid only if the general is commander.
So, where's the matter ? Pop up info display wrong info or the abilities are listed in the battle report but are not taken in account ? If this is the case, why system do not inform me that that abilities were not active during the battle ?
Example: 4 Years, Crispinus, Ability School of Defense. I see it listed in the battle report even if Crispinus was not the stack commander.
