My first AGEOD game and loving it - a few questions/suggestions re Pompey vs Ceasar

Mon Oct 01, 2012 2:24 pm

The late Roman Republic is one of my favourite periods and after getting my head round the game and reading the manual I have being having lots of Pompey vs Ceasar fun.

I finished a scenerio for the first time last night due to a national moral victory as Ceasar and have a few comments:

1. The Pompey AI loves raiding with small armies - this I suppose is a valid tactic to some extent but is self defeating for the AI as it never builds up enough strength in Asia to challenge me - if Pompey decides to stay in Asia shouldnt the AI then be scripted/encouraged to assemble a massive force rather than constantly send small armies to raid Italy? Playing 'whack a mole' in Italy and Sicily is not much of a challenge and often leads to the AI losing NM points.

2. In general there any way that the AI can be encouraged to keep its forces together more under the command of one general? I understand raiding and splitting forces up is a valid tactic but the AI always seems to do it and you end up chasing multiple small armies around and easily beating them when you catch them. I havent yet played any other scenerios but this does seem to be the case in Pompey vs Ceasar. I have yet to have any really epic set piece battles against the AI (expect in Spain if you catch Africanus beofre the AI decides to split his force into penny packets) and in every game so far I have defeated Pompey with him leading nothing more than a few Aux and cavalry.

3. Please lock Juba's army to Africa only

4. Pompey and Labenius where good generals and I dont think they should struggle against Marc Anthony or Sulla as much as they seem to - I undertsand Ceasars troops are more seasoned but still.....

5. Is there any way to make events pop up rather than be hidden in the logs? Also can the criteria to trigger events like Spain and Italy changing sides be made clearer anywhere?

Sorry to complain I do like the game and appreciate all the hard work that has gone into it.

I posted a thread about the AI raiding a few days ago. The devs said it had something to do with the AI breaking up armies at the outset of scenarios, then having a hard time reassembling them for larger battles. Constantly running around having to chase down small AI forces drives all of us crazy, I think.

As to the Juba issue, I think they said it was going to be addressed in a future patch. Seems to make sense, since the AI will often land Juba's large African force in Italy for a move against Rome, which just seems to go against political and logistical realities of the time period.

Glad I am not the only one!

Looking at Jubas army I was suprised to see Phalagnites - I thought Juba had at this point trained his army along Roman lines?

Welcome to the forum!

Glad to hear you are having fun, have you spiced up the AI settings? "Give AI more time and detection/activation bonus".

I've played a few AGEOD games, buying their first release BOA a few years ago and having one of the compilation packs. However this is by far my favourite (except WW1 gold, but then I'm obsessed with WW1).

SO a massive thumbs up from me aswell.
