Railway War

Fri Dec 03, 2010 10:32 pm

So far I always neeeded military control of a region, before I can transport anything by rail. I wonder if this is not somewhat unrealistic, as it precludes the railway war that was in fact a very essential part of this Civil War.

For example the german General von Hoffmann wrote: "It is the most comical war I have ever known" "We put a handful of infantrymen with machine guns and one gun onto a train and rush them off to the next station. They take it make prisoners of the Bolsheviks, pick up some more troops, and so on."

The Socialists also conducted railway war during 1917, that was how they could take control of the country so quickly.

I know of course that it is a very improtant feature to balance the game. Perhaps railways transport in uncontrolled regions could be restricted to just certain, very small units?

you need exactly at least 25% of MC of a region. very difficult question indeed, as even restricted to small units, you could send one to Moscow as White, or Samara as Red, creating more problems than it solves. Railways war is figured in RUS by June 18 starting situation: at first, Reds had 100% MC in most Ural? We toned down this in order to speed Siberian advance...

Well, you could increase the cost in railway points, if the control is low, in a drastic way. That way it would not be possible to bring in huge stacks, or very far behind enemy lines.

Just an idea.

I'm not sure how armoured trains work concerning MC. But essentially those are the small units that were used in such raids. I think these armoured trains could use some improvements still, maybe an improved railroad repair function (like engineers, but just for railroad repair). unfortunatelly there still is only one possible level of rr damage, otherwise one could give armoured trains a bonus in damaging too (I recently read a funny report in a WWII history (the 1941/42 Malaya campaign) , an armoured train was ordered to destroy a rr-bridge before the enemy could cross it, when the explosion failed to destroy the bridge they decided they'd sacrifice the train itself, disembarked all personnel, rigged the engine ans sent it off across the damaged bridge thinking it's weight would collapse the thing, the heavy train ended up jumping the rails to the astonishment of it's former crew looking on, crossed the damaged bridge and disapeared into enemy lands beyond the horizon and was reported seen running for a hundred kilometers further, before that that train had been used mostly for such destroy or repair missions)...
