What are the brown dotted lines?

The ones that are there instead of borders between regions... are they some sort of redoubt?

They show borders of regions (political ones), just for chrome and easy spotting (you can also check that with the area filter button)

Thanks, what are redoubts then? It talked about them in the manual but I couldn't figure out what they look like on the map.

Check the DNO sceanrio, Reds side...you have one in Kamenskaya, NW of Novocherkassk, and you can see also 2 in Pechory and Ostrov respectively, SW of Pskov...they work like very strong fortified 'settlements', an in particular they should prevent breakthrough...
