Unit Pictures - quite a few need changing please

Wed Mar 31, 2010 8:57 pm

I'm greatly enjoying this game so far, only a week or so in, and hope it proves to be a great success for all concerned.

I'm new to the series, so perhaps I'm out of step with the demands of the Ageod community but after a short look at the game it seems that there quite a number of inaccuracies with the unit icons as far as uniforms are concerned. I'm sure that for a large proportion of the clientele for RoP it doesn't make a difference, but for some like me part of the attraction of this era is the uniforms and it's annoying to see them mixed up.

The current artwork are beautiful creations and I'm not expecting perfection down to the correct lace patterns. Getting the engine where it needs to be and ironing out the bugs are more important than the chrome of correct icons, but it would be the icing on the cake to get basic inaccuracies corrected.

Some would appear to be easy (I think) fixes where icons just need to be swapped. These are a few stand-outs:

Some of the Prussian Musketeers are using what should be a Fusilier icon (Unit_PRU_Inf3), and the "Fusiliers" are using a Musketeer icon.

Some of the British infantry appear to be using an icon "Unit_Fus" which would probably work for a Hanoverian but not British - no moustaches in the British Army at this time.

The Prussian Karabinier Regiment was just another Kuirassier regiment so should use that icon instead of the light blue we currently have.

Prussian and Austrian Dragoons weren't in white in the SYW- Prussians should be Cornflower Blue and Austrians either dark blue or red.The Prussian Dragoons might be ok at a pinch by renaming a copy of "Unit_hvycav2" as the Prussian Dragoon entry but there doesn't appear to be a suitable icon in the current mix for the Austrians, unless the original artist can just fill in the coat with the correct colour.

"Unit_FRA_Inf0" should be used for Saxon infantry only.

British Heavy Cavalry certainly weren't wearing cuirasses outside their coats in the SYW, if at all, so you could use the British Dragoon icon as a stand-in, perhaps without the musket.

The Osprey series, while it has its flaws, provides some good basics and can now be partially accessed online on googlebooks. url=http://www.kronoskaf.com/syw/index.php?title=Main_Page]Project SYW[/url] also provides useful information.

Am I correct in assuming that if I make the relevant changes in icon names in Units, Portraits and Armies&Fleets files (ie: take the current icon "Unit_hvycav2" and rename it "Unit_PRU_Dra0" etc.) then the changes should work as the engine is just looking for an icon called "Unit_PRU_Dra0" for instance and won't care if it's original or modified?

How many individual unit icons can the engine handle? Yes, I'm a megalomaniac and want individual icons for each regiment, or at least more variety of icons for each type of unit within a national roster. I realize that that would involve mucking around with data files but it would be nice to know the limitations before embarking on such a project.

I'm looking forward to seeing how this game develops.

Can you create new units graphics or modify the existing ones?
